Fluvial bedrock gorges as markers for Late-Quaternary tectonic and climatic forcing in the Southwestern Alps

Thibaut Cardinal et al.

Summary: This study aims to distinguish the contributions of short-term climatic fluctuations and long-term tectonic forcing to Late-Quaternary fluvial incision by measuring Cl-36 concentrations in Jurassic limestones. The results show that fluvial incision is influenced by both climatic fluctuations and resistant lithologies. Gorges connected to glaciers exhibit a significant response to climatic variations, while disconnected gorges are in agreement with long-term tectonic forcing.

Nonlinear forcing of climate on mountain denudation during glaciations

Apolline Mariotti et al.

Summary: Denudation is a major process shaping landscapes, with climatic fluctuations exerting a nonlinear forcing on denudation, mainly controlled by the interplay between glacier velocity and basin topography. The onset of Quaternary glaciations did not necessarily induce a synchronous global denudation pulse.

Last-glacial-cycle glacier erosion potential in the Alps

Julien Seguinot et al.

Summary: The study calculates the distribution of glacier erosion in the Alps over the past 120,000 years to the present using glacier modeling and empirical inferences of bedrock erosion, showing significant variation in erosion potential at different stages. Steeper glacier surface slopes during glacier retreat phases may result in rapid erosion, indicating that climatic conditions leading to glacier erosion might be transient and specific.
