Etiology, Risk Factors and Clinical Outcomes in Infective Endocarditis Patients Requiring Cardiac Surgery

Kristians Meidrops et al.

Summary: This study investigated the etiology, risk factors, and outcomes of infective endocarditis caused by different bacterial agents. The results showed that Staphylococcus aureus was the most common causative agent, and bicuspid aortic valve and intravenous drug usage were common predisposing factors. S. aureus was associated with worsening long-term prognosis and higher rates of embolic complications.

Modified Duke/European Society of Cardiology 2015 clinical criteria for infective endocarditis: time for an update?

Alfonso Jan Kemp Pecoraro et al.

Summary: The sensitivity of the modified Duke/ESC 2015 clinical criteria is lower than expected in patients with IE in South Africa, primarily due to the high rates of Bartonella-associated BCNIE. Elevating Bartonella serology to a major microbiological criterion, similar to the status of Coxiella burnetii in the current criteria, would increase the sensitivity. Majority of patients with definite IE by pathological criteria had less than three minor criteria present.

Antibacterial and Antifungal Management in Relation to the Clinical Characteristics of Elderly Patients with Infective Endocarditis: A Retrospective Analysis

Camelia Melania Budea et al.

Summary: The prevalence of infective endocarditis (IE) in the elderly is increasing, with unique clinical characteristics and prognosis. However, the treatment approach for elderly patients has not been well investigated and should take into consideration the patient's functional state and comorbid conditions.

Summary: Infectious diseases are a significant concern for pediatric cancer patients, particularly those experiencing fever and neutropenia. This review analyzes the latest literature on therapeutic strategies and efficacy for pediatric patients with febrile neutropenia. It highlights the importance of prompt administration of empiric broad-spectrum antibiotics and the need for improved identification of underlying causes.
