Clinical impact of additional findings detected by genome-wide non-invasive prenatal testing: Follow-up results of the TRIDENT-2 study

Lisanne van Prooyen Schuurman et al.

Summary: The TRIDENT-2 study examines the clinical impact of genome-wide non-invasive prenatal testing (GW-NIPT) in pregnant women. The study found that additional findings were detected in 0.36% of pregnancies, with most fetal chromosomal abnormalities associated with severe clinical phenotypes. Cases with confined placental mosaicism (CPM) showed increased rates of pre-eclampsia and low birth weight. Maternal findings mainly included malignancies and pathogenic copy number variants.

Systematic review of fetal and placental metastases among pregnant patients with cancer

Aline Khazzaka et al.

Summary: Little is known about placental and fetal metastases among pregnant women with cancer. This systematic review identified the clinical and pathological characteristics, treatment trends, and prognosis of placental and fetal metastases. The majority of cases were associated with gestational melanoma and lung cancers. Diagnoses were often made during the third trimester and few patients received cancer-specific therapy. The prognosis was poor, with short maternal survival and a low one-year infant survival rate. The most common fetal metastatic sites were the lungs, scalp, and liver.

Vaginal Transmission of Cancer from Mothers with Cervical Cancer to Infants

Ayumu Arakawa et al.

Summary: Two cases of pediatric lung cancer resulting from mother-to-infant transmission of uterine cervical tumors were incidentally detected. Spontaneous regression of some lesions in the first child and slow growth of the tumor mass in the second child suggested the existence of alloimmune responses. Treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy led to a strong regression of all remaining tumors in the first child.

Maternal Hematologic Neoplasms during Pregnancy: Histologic Findings in the Placenta

Ashlie E. Rubrecht et al.

Summary: Placental metastasis of maternal neoplasms in hematologic tumors is not common and often restricted to the maternal compartment. Maternal vascular malperfusion was documented in the majority of cases, at 72%. Neonatal follow-up showed that all children were alive and well in this study.

Clinical outcomes and prognostic biomarkers among pregnant, post-partum and nulliparous women with breast cancer: a prospective cohort study

Katarzyna J. Jerzak et al.

Summary: The study compared clinical-pathologic characteristics and outcomes of pregnancy-associated, post-partum, and nulliparous breast cancer patients, revealing that post-partum breast cancer patients had lower DFS and OS. Higher levels of PDL1 and stromal TILs in post-partum breast cancer patients suggest potential effectiveness of adjuvant immunotherapy in this subgroup.

Placental pathology in cancer during pregnancy and after cancer treatment exposure

Vera E. R. A. Wolters et al.

Summary: Cancer during pregnancy can lead to small for gestational age offspring, possibly due to exposure to chemotherapy in utero. Placental pathology related to cancer and cancer treatment may include histopathologic changes, cellular pathology, and involvement of cancer cells in the placenta. Growth restriction in these pregnancies may have multifactorial causes.

Non-invasive prenatal testing suggesting a maternal malignancy: What do we tell the prospective parents in Belgium?

Lore Lannoo et al.

Summary: Cancer diagnosed during pregnancy is rare but increases risks for the fetus. Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) can assist in identifying DNA derived from maternal malignancy. The long-term implications of maternal disease treatment during pregnancy on both maternal and fetal health should be carefully considered.
