Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Street Sweepings

Atiye Ahmadireskety et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 117 street sweeping samples for PFAS, with 56 samples collected from Gainesville, Florida. PFCAs were the dominant class of PFAS in Gainesville, and PFOA and PFOSlin were the most frequently detected PFAS. Additionally, this study documented the first-time detection of hexadecafluorosebacic acid and perfluoro-3,6,9-trioxaundecane-1,11-dioic acid within environmental samples.

6PPD-Quinone: Revised Toxicity Assessment and Quantification with a Commercial Standard

Zhenyu Tian et al.

Summary: Stormwater exposure can lead to acute mortality of coho salmon, with 6PPD-quinone identified as the primary toxicant. Analysis of commercial standards of 6PPDQ revealed a high bias in prior reporting. This study re-confirmed toxicity estimates using a commercial standard and developed a quantification method. The results showed higher responses with the commercial standard and a significantly lower LC50 value compared to previous reports, highlighting the substantial lethality of 6PPD-Q.

Abiotic oxidative transformation of 6-PPD and 6-PPD quinone from tires and occurrence of their products in snow from urban roads and in municipal wastewater

Bettina Seiwert et al.

Summary: The study investigated the abiotic oxidative transformation of 6-PPD and its presence in different environmental compartments. The results showed that most of these transformation products will enter water bodies with road runoff, and suggestions were made to reduce the emission of 6-PPD and its TPs.

Acute Toxicity of the Tire Rubber-Derived Chemical 6PPD-quinone to Four Fishes of Commercial, Cultural, and Ecological Importance

Markus Brinkmann et al.

Summary: N-(1,3-Dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-quinone), a transformation product of the rubber tire antioxidant 6PPD, has been identified as the chemical responsible for urban runoff mortality syndrome in coho salmon. This study investigated the acute toxicity of 6PPD-quinone to rainbow trout, brook trout, Arctic char, and white sturgeon. Results showed that rainbow trout and brook trout were more sensitive to the chemical, while Arctic char and white sturgeon were less affected.

The Tire-Derived Chemical 6PPD-quinone Is Lethally Toxic to the White-Spotted Char Salvelinus leucomaenis pluvius but Not to Two Other Salmonid Species

Kyoshiro Hiki et al.

Summary: The study found that there are significant differences in sensitivity to 6PPD-Q among salmonid species, with Salvelinus leucomaenis pluvius being the most sensitive. In addition, the results of tissue concentration measurements suggest that toxicodynamic factors and toxicokinetics may affect species sensitivity differences.

Assessing the Ecological Risks of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances: Current State-of-the Science and a Proposed Path Forward

Gerald T. Ankley et al.

Summary: PFAS are a group of chemicals of potential concern to human health and the environment. Data on risks in either prospective or retrospective assessments are lacking for most PFAS. Cross-disciplinary approaches are needed to assess the ecological risk of PFAS.

A ubiquitous tire rubber-derived chemical induces acute mortality in coho salmon

Zhenyu Tian et al.

Summary: Research on coho salmon in the U.S. Pacific Northwest revealed unexpected risks of a highly toxic quinone transformation product of the tire rubber antioxidant 6PPD. This implies toxicological relevance for burned-off tire rubber residues to aquatic species.

Treading Water: Tire Wear Particle Leachate Recreates an Urban Runoff Mortality Syndrome in Coho but Not Chum Salmon

Jenifer K. McIntyre et al.

Summary: The study reveals that tire tread wear particles (TWP) in the developed U.S. Pacific Northwest cause acute mortality of adult coho salmon, with closely related chum salmon showing a different response. Adult coho salmon exhibit acute lethal responses to TWP leachate similar to roadway runoff, displaying similar behaviors and blood changes. These findings confirm that environmentally relevant TWP exposures lead to acute mortalities in a key aquatic species.

Multi-region assessment of chemical mixture exposures and predicted cumulative effects in USA wadeable urban/agriculture-gradient streams

Paul M. Bradley et al.

Summary: Chemical-contaminant mixtures are widely reported in headwater streams, with diverse compositions dominated by designed bioactives. These mixtures are strongly correlated with watershed development metrics, weakly correlated with point-source discharges, and negatively correlated with instream invertebrate metrics. The exposure to these mixtures may lead to adverse effects on aquatic organisms.
