Ivermectin as an endectocide may boost control of malaria vectors in India and contribute to elimination

Sundus Shafat Ahmad et al.

Summary: Malaria is a significant public health burden, and controlling it requires a balance between diagnosis, treatment, and vector control strategies. The Indian government has launched a malaria elimination plan with the aim to achieve a nationwide malaria-free status by 2030. Researchers propose exploring ivermectin as a vector control tool for fighting malaria in India.

Weather integrated malaria prediction system using Bayesian structural time series model for northeast states of India

Hariprasad Vavilala et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to understand the epidemiological patterns of malaria transmission dynamics in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, India, and develop a malaria prediction model using monthly climate factors. Malaria transmission showed a strong seasonal variation, with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax being the predominant parasites in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, respectively. The highest incidence of malaria was during the monsoon period, with higher rates among males and the > 15 years age group. The study found a negative association between malaria cases and maximum and mean temperature. The Bayesian structural time series (BSTS) model showed superior predictive performance compared to the Seasonal Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average with eXogenous factors (SARIMAX) model.

A 2-month field cohort study of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva of BNT162b2 vaccinated nursing home workers

Claude Saegerman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine on the shedding of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva samples from nursing home workers. The results showed that vaccination significantly reduced the excretion of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva samples, with greater variability in viral loads observed in the unvaccinated group.

Defeating malaria in the North-East region: the forerunner for malaria elimination in India

Vas Dev et al.

Summary: India aims to eliminate malaria by 2027, with the North-East region contributing significantly to malaria cases mainly caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Various intervention tools have been successful in reducing disease transmission, but resistance in Anopheles culicifacies and Plasmodium falciparum poses challenges. Assam has shown progress in malaria control efforts.

Evidence that seasonal malaria chemoprevention with SPAQ influences blood and pre-erythrocytic stage antibody responses of Plasmodium falciparum infections in Niger

Lamine Mahaman Moustapha et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine + amodiaquine (SPAQ) on antibody concentrations in young children in Niger. The results suggest that SMC implementation may affect the natural acquisition of anti-Plasmodium immunity in children. Further research is needed to better understand the effect of SMC on malaria immunity.

Impact of rice straw biochar addition on the sorption and leaching of phenylurea herbicides in saturated sand column

Yitong Dan et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the dosage of rice straw biochar (RSB) can significantly enhance the sorption of phenylurea herbicides (PUHs), while adjusting the pH and ionic strength (IS) had no obvious impact. The optimal sorption conditions were determined as pH 3, IS 0.1 M, and RSB dosage 60 mg, with maximum removal rates of 41.9%, 25%, and 56.8% for Monuron, Diuron, and Linuron, respectively. The co-transport process of RSB and PUHs was affected by RSB dosage and pH value, while the presence of RSB increased the amount of dynamic sorption sites, leading to a significant promotion of PUHs' sorption and interception.

Socio-economic and household determinants of malaria in adults aged 45 and above: analysis of longitudinal ageing survey in India, 2017-2018

Indumathi Mohan et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the major socio-economic and housing factors associated with malaria in adults aged 45 and above in India. It found that caste (scheduled tribes), low education levels, and rural residence are important factors that increase the likelihood of malaria. Improving literacy and housing conditions may help India's malaria elimination efforts, in addition to vector and parasite control strategies in tribal-dominated regions.
