Selective electrochemical reductive amination of benzaldehyde at heterogeneous metal surfaces

Zachary J. Schiffer et al.

Summary: In this work, we demonstrate an electrochemical analog to reductive amination for the synthesis of benzylamine from benzaldehyde and ammonia. Our system achieves imine hydrogenation via an inner-sphere route on an Ag electrocatalyst at ambient conditions, with high Faradaic efficiency and current density. Overall, this work represents a step towards inner-sphere electrochemical reductive amination systems, expanding the potential of heterogeneous electrocatalysts for these reactions.

Electrocatalytic Reductive Amination and Simultaneous Oxidation of Biomass-Derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Man Zhang et al.

Summary: Simultaneous upgrading of biomass derivatives is a challenging task. In this study, a new electrocatalytic route was proposed to convert biomass-derived compounds into valuable products. The use of specific electrode materials resulted in high conversion rates and good stability. This work provides a sustainable pathway for biomass upgrading.

Multifunctional biocatalyst for conjugate reduction and reductive amination

Thomas W. Thorpe et al.

Summary: This study characterizes a multifunctional biocatalyst for chiral amine synthesis, with a previously unreported mechanism. This enzyme can efficiently synthesize chiral amine diastereomers with multiple stereocentres, which is important for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. The findings suggest that the IRED family can be further explored for enzymatic activities in synthetic biology and organic synthesis.

The Pharmaceutical Industry in 2020. An Analysis of FDA Drug Approvals from the Perspective of Molecules

Beatriz G. de la Torre et al.

Summary: In 2020, a total of 53 new drugs were approved by the US FDA, including 40 new chemical entities and 13 biologics. The approved drugs consist of monoclonal antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates, peptides, and oligonucleotides, with a notable presence of fluorine atoms and/or nitrogen aromatic heterocycles. These new drugs are classified based on their chemical structures as biologics, TIDES, natural products, fluorine-containing molecules, nitrogen aromatic heterocycles, and other small molecules.

Reviving electrocatalytic reductive amination: a sustainable route from biogenic levulinic acid to 1,5-dimethyl-2-pyrrolidone

Sonja D. Murtz et al.

Summary: The electrocatalytic reductive amination provides a green pathway for the synthesis of N-containing chemicals using water as a hydrogen source and mild reaction conditions. Systematic studies on suitable reaction conditions and application to biogenic substrates are rare, but the authors present a successful transformation of levulinic acid to 1,5-dimethyl-2-pyrrolidone. By optimizing various factors including electrode material, substrate concentration, current density, solvent, electrolyte, and pH value, the authors achieved a high yield of the desired product and provided a methodology for the benign synthesis of N-containing species.
