Soluble and reusable polymer-based catalysts with Bronsted and Lewis acidity for the one-pot synthesis of hydroxymethylfurfural from glucose

Ibeh S. S. Omodolor et al.

Summary: This article presents a novel polystyrene sulfonic acid-based catalyst for the efficient synthesis of HMF from glucose. The catalyst has both Bronsted and Lewis acid sites, enabling both glucose isomerization and fructose dehydration reactions. By adjusting the Bronsted to Lewis acid ratio, a HMF yield of 55mol% was achieved, and the catalyst could be recycled multiple times.

Study of base-catalyzed isomerization of D-glucose with a focus on reaction kinetics

Matthias Fischer et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the isomerization of D-glucose into D-fructose using the simplest possible base catalyst, aqueous NaOH. The reaction yielded up to 31% D-fructose under mild conditions, and the selectivity-conversion plots were not significantly affected by variations in temperature, pH value, or substrate concentration. The study also proposed a reaction network for kinetic modeling and determined the thermodynamic ionization constants of the saccharides.

Effective Production of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural from Fructose over a Highly Active Sulfonic Acid Functionalized SBA-15 Catalyst

Yutong Zhu et al.

Summary: Utilizing sugar compounds as feedstock for conversion to HMF is sustainable and economically viable. A heterogeneous base catalyst, SBA-15-SO3H, has been created for fructose hydrolysis reactions, showing excellent catalytic performance. The catalyst allows for high fructose conversion rate and HMF yield under mild conditions, fast reaction rate, and simple operation.

Catalytic dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural by propyl sulfonic acid functionalized magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite

Sabah Karimi et al.

Summary: A solid acid catalyst with propyl sulfonic acid groups covalently immobilized on the surface of magnetic graphene oxide was reported for the efficient conversion of fructose to 5-HMF. The catalyst showed a high yield of 87% under optimized conditions, and exhibited stability and reusability for at least five cycles. The nanocomposite combined the advantages of high surface area from graphene oxide and fast separation by magnetic nanoparticles.

Natural mineral bentonite as catalyst for efficient isomerization of biomass-derived glucose to fructose in water

Xin Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of the textural and acid-base properties of bentonite on glucose isomerization reaction, showing that Bromsted base was responsible for the isomerization. The highest fructose yield of 39.2% with 86.3% selectivity was achieved, and alkaline rinse and calcination were able to recover most of the spent catalyst's catalytic activity.
