Children's Exposure to Lead from Tap Water in Child Care Centers and Estimation of Blood Lead Levels

Fei Chen et al.

Summary: The continuous exposure to low levels of lead can have adverse effects on the neurodevelopment of young children. This study analyzed water samples from child care centers in Ontario, Canada to determine the lead concentrations and assessed the seasonal changes. Blood lead levels of children were estimated using a biokinetic model. The results showed that the average exposure scenario had significantly lower blood lead levels compared to the level of concern, but the worst-case scenario still indicated relatively elevated levels.

Comprehensive insight into the neurotoxic mechanisms of low dose Pb exposure in Wistar rats: Benchmark dose analysis

Dragana Javorac et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the neurotoxic effects and mechanisms of lead (Pb) at six low doses and establish a dose-response relationship. The results showed that subacute exposure to very low doses of Pb resulted in memory deficits, decreased acetylcholinesterase activity, oxidative stress in the brain, and elevated zinc levels. Histological alterations in Purkinje cells were only observed in the group treated with the highest dose of Pb. These findings are important for assessing the health consequences and human health risk of low-level Pb exposure.

Characteristics of trace elements bound to ambient nanoparticles (PM0.1) and a health risk assessment in southern Thailand

Worradorn Phairuang et al.

Summary: The study in Hat Yai, Thailand in 2018 examined ambient nanoparticles, PM0.1, and thirteen trace elements. PM0.1 levels were influenced by motor vehicles, crustal dust, industrial, and biomass burning, with the highest concentrations in the pre-monsoon season. The total cancer risk from carcinogenic elements was within a tolerable range, despite concerns about increasing PM0.1 levels from transboundary haze pollution and local emissions.

Pollution and health: a progress update

Richard Fuller et al.

Summary: The Lancet Commission on pollution and health reported that pollution was responsible for 9 million premature deaths in 2015, making it the world's largest environmental risk factor for disease and premature death. Updated data from 2019 shows that pollution is still responsible for approximately 9 million deaths per year, with reductions in some types of pollution offset by increases in others. Despite efforts, little progress has been made in addressing pollution, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries.

Understand the local and regional contributions on air pollution from the view of human health impacts

Yueqi Jiang et al.

Summary: The study showed that local emissions have a larger contribution to PM2.5-related deaths compared to PM2.5 concentrations, highlighting the importance of local emissions control. In rural areas, regional transport has a greater impact on PM2.5-related deaths, resulting in environmental inequality. An unexpected benefit from multi-regional joint controls is suggested for reducing the regional transport of PM2.5 pollution and mitigating associated environmental inequality.
