Furanic Humins from Biorefinery as Biobased Binder for Bitumen

Anna Sangregorio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of industrial humins as a sustainable binder for bitumen to reduce its environmental impact. The results show that the modified bitumen with humins exhibits a higher storage modulus and lower frequency susceptibility at high temperatures, as well as a lower phase angle and temperature susceptibility at low temperatures.

Humins Blending in Thermoreversible Diels-Alder Networks for Stiffness Tuning and Enhanced Healing Performance for Soft Robotics

Kenneth Cerdan et al.

Summary: Valorization of humins waste plays an essential role in improving the economic viability and circularity of biorefinery processes. This research explores the incorporation of humins in a Diels-Alder polymer network, which results in enhanced healing efficiency and stiffness-tunable features. The study also demonstrates the first achievement of both damage healing and zone reinforcement in a single intrinsic self-healing system.

Catalytic hydrotreatment of humins into cyclic hydrocarbons over solid acid supported metal catalysts in cyclohexane

Junmin Sun et al.

Summary: This study presents the selective catalytic conversion of biomass-derived humins into cyclic hydrocarbons using a Ru/W-P-Si-O catalyst, achieving high conversion rates and selectivity. Results showed that the CAC bond network can be efficiently depolymerized at mild reaction temperatures, resulting in up to 95.4% conversion of humins with 88.3% yield of cyclic hydrocarbons. The research paves the way for the efficient production of cyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons from humin polymer through Lewis acid-catalyzed Diels-Alder reactions.

Characterization and Valorization of Humins Produced by HMF Degradation in Ionic Liquids: A Valuable Carbonaceous Material for Antimony Removal

Amir Al Ghatta et al.

Summary: Research has shown that processing biomass in ionic liquids can maximize the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, but the low stability of HMF at high temperatures leads to the formation of humins through side reactions. By gaining a better understanding of humin formation and their potential application in metal extraction, humins show promise as effective adsorbents for water purification.

A Humins-Derived Magnetic Biochar for Water Purification by Adsorption and Magnetic Separation

C. Lomenech et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of magnetic biochar particles for adsorption of hydrophilic organic pollutants. By preparing biochar with co-precipitated magnetic iron oxide on the surface, the study found fast adsorption rates and comparable adsorption capacities to literature values. The electrostatic attraction between methylene blue and magnetic biochar was identified as the dominant interaction mechanism. Additionally, a laboratory-scale device was developed for efficient separation of the composite from the liquid phase.
