Nitrogen isotopes in nitrate aerosols collected in the remote marine boundary layer: Implications for nitrogen isotopic fractionations among atmospheric reactive nitrogen species

Jianghanyang Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the nitrogen isotopic composition of nitrate aerosols collected at Baring Head, New Zealand, and found significant seasonal variations, with lower values in the summer and higher values in the winter. The study also quantified isotopic fractionations during various oxidation processes of NOx, attributing the seasonal variations to the oxidation pathways of NO2. The overall isotopic fractionation factors were found to be lower in the summer and higher in the winter.

Global tropospheric halogen (Cl, Br, I) chemistry and its impact on oxidants

Xuan Wang et al.

Summary: An updated mechanism for tropospheric halogen chemistry in the GEOS-Chem model improves the efficiency of recycling and mobilization of bromine radicals, resulting in a lower global mean tropospheric BrO mixing ratio of 0.19 ppt. Model simulations show that Cl atoms contribute 0.8% of the global oxidation of methane. The study highlights the importance of halogen chemistry in influencing tropospheric oxidants and ozone concentrations.

iNRACM: incorporating 15N into the Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Mechanism (RACM) for assessing the role photochemistry plays in controlling the isotopic composition of NOx, NOy, and atmospheric nitrate

Huan Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the importance of nitrogen oxides in the troposphere and introduces a new method of using N isotopes to trace compound formations. A photochemical mechanism was developed to simulate N isotopic effects, showing promising results in replicating atmospheric chemical reactions. The incorporation of isotope fractionation factors accurately captures isotope effects during NOy photochemistry, suggesting a potential new approach for tracing in situ N chemistry and assessing NOx emission budgets.
