Plasmonic Tamm states in periodic stubbed MIM waveguides: analytical and numerical study

Yamina Rezzouk et al.

Summary: In this study, the existence of localized surface modes, called plasmonic Tamm states (PTSs), is investigated analytically and numerically in a versatile platform based on a periodic array of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) stubs grafted along a MIM waveguide. The study shows the existence of surface states inside the bandgaps of the periodic structure and investigates the dependence of the localized modes on the geometrical parameters and boundary conditions. The study also demonstrates that the PTSs can be detected through dips in the amplitudes of transmission and reflection coefficients, as well as peaks in the delay times and local density of states (LDOS).

Tunable Topological Acoustic Tamm States in Comblike Structures Based on Band Inversion around Flat Bands

Soufyane Khattou et al.

Summary: We investigate the existence and topological properties of acoustic Tamm states at the interface between two one-dimensional comblike phononic crystals. By analyzing the bulk band structure and the symmetry of the band edge states, we derive a condition for the existence of interface states based on the Zak phases. We reveal these states through the local density of states, transmission spectra, and reflection coefficients. Additionally, we demonstrate the possibility of transforming interface states into bound states in the continuum and the sensitivity of these states to interface perturbations.

One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals with Different Termination Layer Thicknesses and Very Narrow Bloch Surface Wave and Guided Wave Based Resonances for Sensing Applications

Tomas Fort et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an efficient sensing method for both gaseous and aqueous analytes using Bloch surface waves (BSWs) and guided waves (GWs) on a truncated one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPhC). The study shows that the 1DPhC can support guided waves excited by an s-polarized wave for gaseous analytes, and both s-polarized and p-polarized waves can be utilized for sensing applications in aqueous analytes. This is the first demonstration of deep BSW-based resonances in two orthogonal polarizations and a narrow resonance in one of them.

Topological optical and phononic interface mode by simultaneous band inversion

O. Ortiz et al.

Summary: Band inversion in one-dimensional superlattices is a strategy to generate topological interface modes, but most realizations have explored only a single excitation mode. This study designs and fabricates devices with simultaneously inverted band structures for light and phonons, observing colocalized interface modes for photons and phonons. Numerical simulations demonstrate the robustness of the Brillouin interaction between them and a set of engineering rules are deduced for different topological designs presenting colocalized states.

Nonreciprocal Tamm plasmon absorber based on lossy epsilon-near-zero materials

Hai Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel planar photonic heterostructure is proposed to achieve nonreciprocal absorption phenomenon for TM polarization, resulting from the interplay between ENZ and material loss. A strong and nonreciprocal absorptance peak with high absorptance value is experimentally observed in a certain angle range. The structure shows strong angle-independence and polarization-dependence, making it promising for various applications in thermal emitters, biosensing, and nonlinear optical devices.

Topological and geometrical aspects of band theory

J. Cayssol et al.

Summary: This paper provides a pedagogical introduction to recent developments in geometrical and topological band theory following the discovery of graphene and topological insulators. It explores the connection of these developments to contributions in high-energy physics by Dirac. The focus is on topological insulators and topological semi-metals, with specific examples of lattice versions of the Dirac equation in different space dimensions.
