Antonio Sanchez-Benitez et al.

Summary: By coupling a climate model and employing the storyline approach, we successfully simulated the European heat wave event and predicted that peak temperatures in Central Europe could reach 50 degrees Celsius in the coming decades.

Overview of the MOSAiC expedition-Atmosphere INTRODUCTION

Matthew D. Shupe et al.

Summary: With the Arctic rapidly changing, there is a crucial need to observe, understand, and model these changes. The MOSAiC expedition successfully documented and characterized various aspects of the Arctic atmospheric system through a comprehensive observational program. The observations revealed the significant influence of atmospheric variability and highlighted the higher temperatures and moisture near the sea ice edge during summer. The obtained data will support further research and modeling capabilities in the Arctic.

Exploring the Dynamics of an Arctic Sea Ice Melt Event Using a Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean Single-Column Model (AOSCM)

Kerstin Hartung et al.

Summary: This article uses the AOSCM model to investigate the sensitivity of model results to changes in physical and model properties, as well as large-scale tendencies, through the observation of a warm air intrusion event in the Arctic. The analysis reveals sensitivities to selected parameters, and the conclusions can be used to understand the behavior of the global host model in various regions.

Assessment of the Finite-VolumE Sea ice-Ocean Model (FESOM2.0) - Part 2: Partial bottom cells, embedded sea ice and vertical mixing library CVMix

Patrick Scholz et al.

Summary: The second part of this paper focuses on the assessment and evaluation of the performance of partial cells and embedded sea ice in the unstructured-mesh Finite-volumE Sea ice-Ocean Model version 2.0 (FESOM2.0), as well as the impact of different mixing parameterisations available through the Community Vertical Mixing (CVMix) package. The study shows significant improvements in the representation of the Gulf Stream, North Atlantic Current, and Arctic Ocean circulation due to the implementation of partial cells and embedded sea ice. Additionally, the paper documents the effect of various mixing parameterisations from the CVMix project library, including tidal mixing, turbulent kinetic energy-based mixing, and a combination of turbulent kinetic energy and internal wave dissipation.

Central Arctic weather forecasting: Confronting the ECMWF IFS with observations from the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition

Michael Tjernstrom et al.

Summary: Forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts' numerical weather prediction model were evaluated using observations from the 2018 Arctic Ocean expedition. The study found that errors in the model are categorized into two groups: dynamics-related variables that grow with forecast length, and thermodynamic variables that exhibit fast error growth and a warm bias in surface temperatures. The errors in surface temperature are attributed to the atmosphere being too warm and a transfer of additional heat from the atmosphere to the surface.

A Parameterization of Turbulent Dissipation and Pressure Damping Time Scales in Stably Stratified Inversions, and its Effects on Low Clouds in Global Simulations

Zhun Guo et al.

Summary: Coarse-resolution global models face challenges in simulating the distribution of low clouds accurately, especially in distinguishing between bright near-coastal stratocumulus and overly bright marine shallow cumuli. A multi-time scale parameterization has been developed to address this issue, which successfully adjusts the simulated brightness levels of clouds.

Impact of Sea-Ice Model Complexity on the Performance of an Unstructured-Mesh Sea-Ice/Ocean Model under Different Atmospheric Forcings

Lorenzo Zampieri et al.

Summary: This study equipped the FESOM2 model with physical parameterizations derived from the Icepack model, expanding the range of physical processes that can be represented. Through iterative calibration, it was found that complex model formulations lead to better representation of sea-ice concentration and snow thickness, with atmospheric forcings also impacting the simulation results.

A methodology for attributing the role of climate change in extreme events: a global spectrally nudged storyline

Linda van Garderen et al.

Summary: In the attribution of extreme weather events, enforcing dynamical conditions through global spectral nudging towards reanalysis data of large-scale vorticity and divergence allows the lower atmosphere to respond freely. Results show that conditional attribution can have a high signal-to-noise ratio on daily timescales and at local spatial scales.

New insights into radiative transfer within sea ice derived from autonomous optical propagation measurements

Christian Katlein et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the radiative transfer of solar radiation through polar sea ice, providing insights into key processes in climate and ecosystem models. By deploying a new instrument in the sea ice, researchers obtained vertically resolved light measurements of radiative transfer processes, revealing the spatiotemporal aspects of radiation transfer within the sea ice itself.
