Programmed Death of Injured Pseudomonas aeruginosa on Mechano-Bactericidal Surfaces

Shuo Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reveals that mechanical injury alone is not enough to immediately kill bacteria, instead causing a type of apoptosis-like death. Removal of mechanical stress leads to poststress apoptosis-like death in damaged cells due to self-accumulated reactive oxygen species in a nonstressed environment.

Min Oscillations as Real-time Reporter of Sublethal Effects in Photodynamic Treatment of Bacteria

Ingrid Ortega et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of photodynamic treatment on the oscillations of MinD, a cell division regulator in Escherichia coli, using real-time single-cell fluorescence imaging. The results show that the concentration of methylene blue, a photosensitizer, disrupts the oscillation pattern of MinD. In contrast to antibiotics, photodynamic treatment abruptly interrupts the oscillation, reflecting different physiological mechanisms leading to bacterial death.

Mechano-Dynamic Analysis of the Bactericidal Activity of Bioinspired Moth-Eye Nanopatterned Surfaces

Maria Teresa Alameda et al.

Summary: Understanding the mechanisms of bactericidal surfaces is important for the development of next-generation mechano-bactericidal surfaces. However, the physical interaction between bacteria and surfaces and the underlying bactericidal mechanisms are not well understood due to the difficulty in characterizing the bacteria-nanostructure interface. This study evaluates the dynamics of the mechano-bactericidal process by measuring the deformations inflicted by nanotopography on the bacterial wall.

Theoretical and computational investigations into mechanobactericidal activity of nanostructures at the bacteria-biomaterial interface: a critical review

Anindo Roy et al.

Summary: Mechanobactericidal surfaces have gained popularity among researchers in the past decade, but the physical interactions and killing mechanisms between bacteria and nanostructures are still poorly understood. Analytical and computational models have been useful in predicting optimal nanostructure dimensions and understanding the forces responsible for cell penetration into nanostructures. Further research is needed to optimize bactericidal activity and address unresolved gaps in the field.
