Field theories for type-II fractons

Weslei B. Fontana et al.

Summary: The paper presents an effective field theory for a type-II fracton starting from the Haah code on the lattice. It also discusses a Chern-Simons-like theory from the opposite perspective, i.e., starting from the continuum, which does not require a constraint or projector and has no mobile excitations.

Anyon condensation: coherent states, symmetry enriched topological phases, Goldstone theorem, and dynamical rearrangement of symmetry

Yuting Hu et al.

Summary: In this paper, we establish the physical foundation of anyon condensation by building the effective Hamiltonian and the Hilbert space. We also generalize the Goldstone theorem to the case of anyon condensation and prove that the condensed phase is a symmetry enriched topological phase by constructing the corresponding symmetry transformations.

Boundary theory of the X-cube model in the continuum

Zhu -Xi Luo et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the boundary theory of the ZN X-cube model from a continuum perspective, and discusses various boundary conditions and the corresponding ground-state degeneracies. The anomaly inflow of the boundary theory is also examined.

Anomaly inflow for subsystem symmetries

Fiona J. Burnell et al.

Summary: This paper studies 't Hooft anomalies and the related anomaly inflow for subsystem global symmetries. These phenomena arise in exotic systems, including models with fracton order. By analyzing several examples, the authors demonstrate these phenomena and find that the anomaly does not uniquely specify the bulk topological phase, discussing the factors affecting the topological phase.

Ungappable edge theories with finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces

Sriram Ganeshan et al.

Summary: We construct a class of edge theories for fermionic Abelian topological phases with specific K matrices. These edge theories have finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and describe boundaries that cannot be gapped by local interactions. By introducing pointlike impurity scatterers in the standard chiral boson edge theory and solving the impurity model in the limit of infinitely strong scattering, we obtain the energy spectrum and ground-state degeneracy. We believe similar edge theories can be constructed for any Abelian topological phase with a vanishing thermal Hall coefficient.

Exotic ZN symmetries, duality, and fractons in 3

Nathan Seiberg et al.

Summary: In this study, gapped systems exhibiting fractonic behavior in 3+1 dimensions were analyzed, with a focus on three dual field theory descriptions of the low-energy physics of the X-cube model. The key aspect of the constructions was the utilization of discontinuous fields in the continuum field theory, demonstrating that while spacetime is continuous, the fields are not.

Exotic symmetries, duality, and fractons in 2

Nathan Seiberg et al.

Summary: The passage discusses nonstandard continuum quantum field theories in 2+1 dimensions, highlighting their exotic global symmetries, charged excitations, and dualities resembling systems in 1+1 dimensions. These continuum models serve as low-energy limits of known lattice systems, with discontinuous field configurations playing a crucial role. Additionally, the authors plan to present 3+1-dimensional versions of these systems in two companion papers, focusing on continuum quantum field theories of some fracton models.

Higher-rank tensor non-Abelian field theory: Higher-moment or subdimensional polynomial global symmetry, algebraic variety, Noether's theorem, and gauging

Juven Wang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a higher-moment polynomial global symmetry in condensed matter physics, relates it to lower degree subdimensional or subsystem global symmetry on layers of submanifolds, and generalizes Noether's theorem. By promoting the higher-moment global symmetry to a local symmetry, a new family of higher-rank symmetric tensor gauge theory can be derived, along with a general class of rank-m tensor non-Abelian gauge field theory.
