Eco-friendly recovery of base and precious metals from waste printed circuit boards by step-wise glycine leaching: Process optimization, kinetics modeling, and comparative life cycle assessment

Mohammad Rezaee et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the step-wise glycine leaching of base and precious metals from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) as a green alternative to cyanide for gold leaching. The optimal conditions for selective copper extraction were found to be 0.5 M glycine, 1% v/v H2O2, 20 g/l pulp density, and ambient temperature, achieving a recovery rate of 99.96%. Gold leaching in the glycine + permanganate system was studied, and it was found that 96.17% of the gold can be selectively extracted at the conditions of 4 g/l glycine, 2 g/l potassium permanganate, and room temperature. Activated carbon can be used to separate about 100% of the gold from the leach solution.

Green extraction of pure ferromagnetic nickel from spent hydroprocessing catalysts via deep eutectic solvents

Ehsan Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: A novel environmentally friendly flowsheet based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was developed to efficiently recover nickel from spent hydroprocessing catalysts. Eight different DESs were evaluated for their potential to leach Ni from spent catalyst samples, and DES-1 (PEG-400:PTSA) and DES-8 (ChCl:EG:PTSA) showed high nickel extraction (>90%). Selective nickel extraction was achieved under optimized conditions, and ferromagnetic face-centered cubic (FCC) nickel powder was successfully produced using the cementation method.

A Novel Deep-Eutectic Solvent with Strong Coordination Ability and Low Viscosity for Efficient Extraction of Valuable Metals from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries

Shujie Tang et al.

Summary: A novel type of deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) composed of ethylene glycol (EG) and sulfosalicylic acid dihydrate (SAD) was designed for efficient leaching of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries for the first time. By systematically investigating the experimental parameters, high extraction efficiencies of Co and Li from different cathode active materials were achieved. The leaching mechanism involved replacement of Li+ ions in the interlayer of LiCoO2 and coordination of Co3+ ions in the skeleton structure to form soluble complexes, with leaching kinetics following the shrinking core model.

Decarbonized and circular brine management/valorization for water & valuable resource recovery via minimal/zero liquid discharge (MLD/ZLD) strategies

Argyris Panagopoulos et al.

Summary: Brine from desalination, salt lakes, and industrial activities has received global attention due to its negative impact on the environment. Current disposal methods are unsustainable, and thus brine treatment and valorization is considered a promising strategy to eliminate discharge and recover valuable resources. While traditional technologies have limitations, novel technologies such as forward osmosis and membrane distillation show promise in treating high salinity brine. Extracting major ions and scarce metals from brine is technically feasible and offers economic opportunities. To make brine treatment systems more eco-friendly, renewable energy sources should be integrated. In addition to water, minerals, salts, metals, and energy can be harvested from brine, including salinity gradient power. Further research and development efforts are needed to promote brine valorization and resource recovery for a CO2-free and circular global economy.

A cleaner approach for high-efficiency regeneration of base and precious metals from waste printed circuit boards through stepwise oxido-acidic and thiocyanate leaching

Mohammad Rezaee et al.

Summary: This study evaluated a green route for regenerating base and precious metals from waste printed circuit boards. Copper and other base metals were extracted via oxidative acid leaching, while gold was extracted using thiocyanate as a green reagent. The gold extraction was carried out using activated carbon. The final residue was found to be environmentally safe with negligible risk.

A Review on Hydrometallurgical Processes for the Recovery of Valuable Metals from Spent Catalysts and Life Cycle Analysis Perspective

Minh Nhan Le et al.

Summary: Recovery of valuable metals such as cobalt, molybdenum, nickel, and vanadium from spent catalysts has attracted attention due to the depletion of high-grade ores. Various hydrometallurgical methods have been reviewed for metal recovery, including adsorption, chelation, ion exchange, leaching, precipitation, and solvent extraction. Combining these techniques is recommended for developing an effective process.

Recovery of pure molybdenum and vanadium compounds from spent petroleum catalysts by treatment with ionic liquid solution in the presence of oxidizing agent

Thanh Tuan Tran et al.

Summary: The selective recovery of vanadium and molybdenum from spent petroleum catalysts was investigated using nonaqueous solutions. Among the different nonaqueous systems studied, ALi-D2 showed the best performance for selective leaching and efficient recovery of vanadium and molybdenum with high purity. Sequential precipitation with NH4Cl and BaCl2 solutions allowed for effective separation of vanadium and molybdenum, providing a less environmentally burdensome process for metal recovery.

Deep eutectic solvents. The new generation of green solvents in analytical chemistry

Alvaro Santana-Mayor et al.

Summary: The development of sustainable chemistry has led to the emergence of new materials, with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a promising non-toxic alternative to toxic organic solvents, seeing a significant increase in their applications in analytical chemistry in recent years. The vast amount of information generated from studies associated with DESs needs continuous revision.

Bioleaching of cobalt from magnetite-rich cobaltite-bearing ore

Hadi Abdollahi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bioleaching of cobaltite-bearing magnetite-rich ore using mesophilic and moderately thermophilic cultures at different pulp densities. The results showed that mesophiles were more effective than moderate thermophiles in bioleaching cobaltite. Additional Fe3+ in the leach solution increased cobalt dissolution. Kinetic modeling indicated that the controlling step of bioleaching with moderate thermophiles was the chemical reaction.

Intensification and optimisation of nickel recovery from spent hydrogenation catalysts via ultrasound-augmented hydrometallurgy

Mitchell S. W. Lim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of ultrasonic irradiation for enhancing nickel extraction from spent catalysts, finding that nitric acid was a more efficient leaching agent than sulfuric acid. By optimizing the process using response surface methodology, a nickel recovery rate of 99.37% was achieved under the modeled optimal conditions. The study demonstrated the beneficial application of ultrasound technology in hydrometallurgical processes for higher recovery efficiencies.
