Ion-π interactions for constructing organic luminescent materials

Guoyu Jiang et al.

Summary: Organic luminescent materials have attracted worldwide attention, and their luminescent efficiency can be adjusted by introducing noncovalent interactions. Ion-pi interactions, including anion-pi interactions and cation-pi interactions, are relatively new but powerful noncovalent interactions with extensive applications in supramolecular chemistry. This minireview provides an overview of organic fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence induced by ion-pi interactions, and discusses the applications of these interactions in bioimaging, imaging-guided anticancer and antibacterial treatment. The challenges and prospects of using anion-pi and cation-pi interactions for constructing organic luminogens are also presented.

Kinetic and thermodynamic control of tetraphenylethene aggregation-induced emission behaviors

Xiancheng Nie et al.

Summary: This article investigates the luminescence emission spectra of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) systems. The results show that temperature variations can cause reduced fluorescence intensity and blue shift of the emission peak in unsubstituted TPE in aqueous suspension. Additionally, thermal treatment of the AIE aqueous suspension containing naphthalimide-substituted TPE compound leads to irreversible quenching of fluorescence, which can be restored through a redissolving-precipitation process.

Molecular design and application of luminescent materials composed of group 13 elements with an aggregation-induced emission property

Shunichiro Ito et al.

Summary: The complexation of p-conjugated ligands by metal or semimetal ions enhances the planarity and rigidity of pi-conjugated systems. Boron has a key role in the design of luminescent main-group complexes, but suffers from aggregation-caused quenching like typical organic fluorophores. Recent studies have shown that some boron complexes exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties and AIE behavior has also been observed in complexes and organometallic compounds of other group 13 elements. These findings encourage the development of advanced functional materials based on group 13 elements, which are versatile scaffolds for constructing chromic luminophores and efficiently emissive pi-conjugated polymers.
