Role of molecular architecture and temperature on extrusion melt flow instabilities of two industrial LLDPE and LDPE polyethylenes investigated by capillary rheology, high-pressure sensitivity slit die and optical analysis

Christos K. Georgantopoulos et al.

Summary: The extrusion flow instabilities of two commercial polyethylenes (PE), both with similar weight average molecular weight, were characterized using capillary rheology, optical analysis, and modeling. The characteristic time periodicity τ* and spatial characteristic wavelength λ were obtained and compared using three different methods. It was found that both the characteristic time periodicity τ* and the spatial characteristic wavelength λ exhibit Arrhenius temperature-dependent behavior.

Influence of E-beam irradiation on compounds from linear low density polyethylene and thermoplastic vulcanized rubber consisting of a polypropylene and ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber phase

David Krieg et al.

Summary: Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) can be crosslinked through irradiation, which improves its chemical and thermal resistance but reduces its mechanical performance. To mitigate this reduction, compounds of LLDPE with thermoplastic elastomers (TPV) are prepared. Irradiation experiments show that compounds with 20 wt% TPV have a decrease of around 12% in gel content compared to pure LLDPE. It is also observed that compounds with 10 wt% TPV have a 4% higher gel content than predicted. Increasing the amount of TPV leads to an increase in elongation at break from 689% for pure LLDPE to 769%, and a decrease in tensile strength from 31.9 to 30.5 MPa. Under irradiation, both elongation at break and tensile strength decrease. Elongation at break decreases by around 200% and tensile strength decreases by around 5 MPa. Thermal analysis reveals that the melting temperature of TPV decreases, and its crystallinity initially increases before decreasing for doses up to 165 kGy. Infrared spectroscopy shows evidence of surface oxidation under irradiation for all compounds containing LLDPE.

Rheology, crystallization, and enhanced mechanical properties of uniaxially oriented ethylene-octene copolymer/polyolefin elastomer blends

Ren Long et al.

Summary: Research on the processing and properties of uniaxial extension modified polyethylene materials for artificial turf is promoted by the application of polyethylene. The effects of comonomer structure on the properties of pre-stretched polyethylene/polyolefin elastomer blends are investigated, with findings showing that octene copolymer can enhance molecular chain interactions. Differential scanning calorimetry, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses reveal higher crystallinity and tensile strength in pre-stretched polyethylene blends.

Performance of SiO2 Filled Functional Polypropylene Substrates for 5th Generation Communication

Xiao Dong Zhi et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared three grades of functional polypropylene/silica nanocomposites for use as fifth generation mobile communication substrates. The crosslinked nanocomposites showed smaller thermal expansion and larger dielectric properties compared to the corresponding non-crosslinked sequence. Suitable loading of silica nanoparticles resulted in smaller dielectric and thermal expansion properties suitable for 5G communication. The results highlight the importance of optimizing the loading of nanoparticles in the nanocomposites.

Ultrahigh Low-Temperature Toughness of Polypropylene Composites with Low Ductile-Brittle Transition Temperature by Introducing Traces of Needlelike Wollastonite

Lei Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, needlelike wollastonite fibers (WF) were incorporated into polypropylene/ethylene octene block copolymer/beta-nucleating agent (PP/OBC/beta-NA) blends to improve their low-temperature toughness. The results showed that the impact strength of the PP/OBC/beta-NA/WF composites was significantly increased at -20 degrees C, with the WF-0.05 sample exhibiting the highest impact strength of 32.1 kJ/m(2), which was 286.6% higher than the WF-0 sample and even 832.6% higher than pure PP. The addition of WF and beta-nucleating agents resulted in coarse and extensive plastic deformation in the WF-0.05 composite. The increase in beta-crystallinity, caused by the synergy of beta-nucleating agent and WF fillers, was mainly responsible for the enhanced impact strength. The inhibitory effect of WF on cracks also contributed to the excellent low-temperature toughness of the PP composites. This material, with its easy processing and low cost, has great potential for applications in various fields, including aerospace, navigation, and the automotive industry.

Stretch-induced structural transition of linear low-density polyethylene during uniaxial stretching under different strain rates

Shengyao Feng et al.

Summary: The structural evolutions of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) during tensile deformation at different strain rates were studied to reveal the phase transition mechanism and crystal behavior in different regions. This study is important for deepening the understanding of structural evolutions during real post-stretching process.
