Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction to CO/CH4 Using a Metal-Organic Soft Coordination Polymer Gel

Parul Verma et al.

Summary: The self-assembly of a low-molecular weight gelator (LMWG) based on a porphyrin core connected to four terpyridine units (TPY-POR) has been demonstrated, which forms a coordination polymer gel (CPG) with Ru-II ions. The Ru-TPY-POR CPG exhibits efficient CO2 photoreduction, with a high selectivity for CO and CH4 using different sacrificial electron donors.

A Ni(II) Metal-Organic Framework with Mixed Carboxylate and Bipyridine Ligands for Ultrafast and Selective Sensing of Explosives and Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Evolution

Sudip Bhattacharjee et al.

Summary: We report the synthesis of a Ni-MOF named Ni-SIP-BPY using two different linkers simultaneously, which exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity toward the mutagenic environmental toxin 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). The mechanistic pathway in the selective TNP detection is determined through experimental and theoretical studies, shedding light on the importance of this research in the context of homeland security. Additionally, the Ni-SIP-BPY material shows potential as a photoanode material for visible-light-driven water splitting due to its low band gap and p-type semiconducting behavior.

Confinement Matters: Stabilization of CdS Nanoparticles inside a Postmodified MOF toward Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Adrija Ghosh et al.

Summary: Insights into developing innovative routes for the stabilization of photogenerated charge-separated states by suppressing charge recombination in photocatalysts is a topic of immense importance. In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based composite was synthesized, where CdS nanoparticles (NPs) were confined inside the nanosized pores of Zr4+-based MOF-808. The confinement of the CdS NPs inside the MOF pores showed a higher rate of H-2 evolution from water compared to CdS NPs stabilized on the external surface of MOF-808.

Cerium-based UiO-66 metal-organic framework for synergistic dye adsorption and photodegradation: A discussion of the mechanism

Danxia Zhao et al.

Summary: The recently developed Ce-UiO-66 exhibits significantly enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic performance for removing both cationic and anionic dyes, surpassing the common Zr-UiO-66. The red-shifted light absorption range of Ce-UiO-66 allows for potential utilization of visible light energy, while its unique charge transfer energy accelerates electron-hole pair separation, leading to effective photolysis of organic dyes. Overall, Ce-UiO-66 presents a promising approach for wastewater treatment with excellent adsorption and photocatalytic activity.

Selective CO2 Photoreduction into C2 Product Enabled by Charge-Polarized Metal Pair Sites

Shan Zhu et al.

Summary: Selective CO2 photoreduction into a high-energy-density C-2 product is challenging, but can be enhanced by designing charge-polarized metal pairs sites. Theoretical calculations and experimental results confirm the asymmetric charge distribution on surface cobalt sites and the formation mechanism of the products. Electron-rich cobalt sites strengthen their interaction with oxygen in the intermediates, facilitating the formation of the desired product.

Reduction of dopant ions and enhancement of magnetic properties by UV irradiation in Ce-doped TiO2

Tai-Sing Wu et al.

Summary: Ce-doped TiO2 diluted magnetic semiconductors show a reduction in dopant ions and enhanced magnetic properties under UV-light irradiation, with increased Ce3+ concentration and oxygen vacancy defects observed. Paramagnetism and ferromagnetism were both observed in all samples up to room temperature, with dramatically enhanced magnetization in the irradiated sample. Theoretical calculations suggest that UV-induced valence holes can lower the formation energy of oxygen vacancies, and the ferromagnetic spin densities near oxygen vacancies in Ce-doped TiO2 are likely the cause of the observed enhancement in magnetism under UV irradiation.

Covalent grafting of molecular photosensitizer and catalyst on MOF-808: effect of pore confinement toward visible light-driven CO2 reduction in water

Sanchita Karmakar et al.

Summary: The study reports the successful design and synthesis of Zr-MBA-Ru/Re-MOF for photocatalytic CO2 reduction, demonstrating high catalytic activity and selectivity in aqueous medium. Covalent immobilization of the photosensitizer and catalyst enhances the lifetime of photoexcited electrons and shortens charge carrier transport distance, leading to efficient CO2 reduction. In situ DRIFT characterization of reaction intermediates and DFT calculations support the established catalytic cycle involving the reaction mechanism.
