Summary: This paper focuses on building a multi-source small-scale facility that aims to increase the integration of renewable energy into the grid while meeting the energy and fresh food needs of a small community. The study found that coupling curtailed power with a potential mass deployment of vertical farms can be a sustainable solution and have a short payback period under specific scenarios.

Summary: COVID-19 has had a comprehensive impact on human existence. Despite global vaccination programs, some governments are struggling with reducing human losses, virus transmission rates, and the socio-economic shock caused by the pandemic. The study conducted in the Republic of Cyprus reveals that the lockdowns have affected potato cultivation and production, leading to limited manpower, disrupted crop distribution, delayed agricultural transactions, and general economic uncertainty in Cyprus. The findings suggest the need for a global transition towards a more resilient and spatially localized food network.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using low-altitude multispectral imagery data to assess irrigation and fertilization techniques and the relative degree of plant water and nutrient stress. The methodology developed in this study can be widely used by vertical farms to detect water and nitrogen deficiencies. The results show that crop reflectance increased due to these deficiencies, and significant correlations were found between reflectance measurements and physiological crop parameters. The research provides data analysis results and suggests that multispectral images can be used as a rapid tool to estimate the physiological status of plants in vertical farms.

Summary: Hydroponics is a crop production method using nutrient solution and controlled environmental conditions, which is more energy intensive yet more productive than traditional agriculture. Although there are limited full-scale examples, the interest in hydroponics has increased with vertical farming and legal cannabis production. Using reclaimed water as a nutrient solution may eventually be economically viable.

Summary: The study finds a significant decrease in the proportion of rural Chinese households engaging in both livestock raising and crop planting, highlighting the need to rebuild the connections for sustainable agriculture. Livestock manure, once a key source of nutrients in traditional farming, is now being underutilized, leading to resource wastage and environmental damage. Rebuilding the links between livestock and croplands at a regional scale offers important opportunities for the sustainable intensification of agriculture in China.

Summary: The biopharmaceutical market is driven by recombinant proteins, mainly for vaccines and antibodies. Plant molecular farming as an alternative production method offers scalability and cost efficiency in upstream processes. However, lack of standardized process equipment has hindered approvals for pharmaceutical proteins from whole plants.

Summary: Producing food through vertical farming is an efficient method with increased yield per unit area, addressing food shortages. While concerns exist over the sustainability of VF systems, analyzing consumer acceptance is crucial. Research shows low acceptance of VF among young Nordic consumers, but more vertical farms in European cities can increase acceptance among young customers.
