MoS2 nanosheets functionalized with ferrocene-containing polymer via SI-ATRP for memristive devices with multilevel resistive switching

Qing Yan et al.

Summary: Designing and synthesizing memristive materials with multilevel memristive switching characteristics is an effective approach to improve data storage capacity. In this study, a novel two-dimensional nanomaterial, MoS2-PDA-PFMMA, was synthesized by grafting a ferrocene-containing polymer onto molybdenum disulfide nanosheets. The fabricated electronic device demonstrated asymmetric multilevel resistive switching characteristics, suggesting a larger data storage capacity compared to traditional devices. This work achieved multilevel resistive switching through material structure design, offering a new perspective for developing memristive devices with ultra-large data storage capacities.

Cytocompatible, soft and thick brush-modified scaffolds with prolonged antibacterial effect to mitigate wound infections

Shaifali Dhingra et al.

Summary: This study presents a new strategy to construct antibacterial and cytocompatible mixed polymer brushes on the surface of biodegradable polyester blends for addressing biomedical device or implant-associated infections. The results show that the mixed brushes of polyDMAPS and polyPEGMA on the scaffold surface exhibit antibacterial efficacy and cytocompatibility. The surface modification with the mixed brushes leads to a hydrophilic, nearly neutral, and soft surface, which completely suppresses bacterial adhesion. Animal studies demonstrate that the brush-modified scaffolds are biocompatible and can mitigate wound infections.

Infection Resistant Surface Coatings by Polymer Brushes: Strategies to Construct and Applications

Shaifali Dhingra et al.

Summary: Bacteria-assisted infections on biomaterials used inside the body are a major threat to human health. Antimicrobial coatings on biomaterials have the potential to mitigate these infections, and polymer brushes with anti-infective functionality are desirable stable coatings that can prolong infection resistance. Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) is a versatile technique for generating polymer brushes, and this review provides an overview of recent developments in infection-resistant polymer brushes synthesized via SI-ATRP and their applications in the biomedical field. The working mechanism and future scope of different types of anti-infective brushes are discussed.

Polymer brush grafted antimicrobial peptide on hydroxyapatite nanorods for highly effective antibacterial performance

Kai Li et al.

Summary: The study found that grafting polymer brushes and HHC-36 did not substantially change the microstructure of the nanorods, but the brushes efficiently increased the load and stability of the HHC-36. HA nanorods themselves cannot kill bacteria, but with the assistance of HHC-36, physical puncturing by nanorods works efficiently in killing Staphylococcus aureus.

Infection resistant polymer brush coating on the surface of biodegradable polyester

Shaifali Dhingra et al.

Summary: This study developed a strategy for an antibacterial coating on a biodegradable substrate, addressing the low cyto-compatibility issue of such coatings. By attaching antibacterial polymer brushes onto hydroxyl functionalized polyester substrate, various aspects such as reaction kinetics, surface density, and antibacterial activity were thoroughly investigated. The study found a balance between antibacterial activity and cyto-compatibility after 18 hours of Surface Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (SIATRP), offering potential for stable, non-leaching anti-infective coatings on biodegradable polymer surfaces.

Control of Polymer Brush Morphology, Rheology, and Protein Repulsion by Hydrogen Bond Complexation

John Andersson et al.

Summary: Polymer brushes, commonly considered to be static, can exhibit significant changes in properties when a polymeric acid like PMAA is introduced. The highly hydrated brush barrier transitions to a compact and dehydrated state at pH 5, leading to rheology changes and loss of protein-repelling ability. The brush properties can be tuned by adjusting the amount of PMAA bound and are reversible upon returning to physiological pH levels, which has potential implications for biomolecule capture/release applications.

Understanding Design Rules for Optimizing the Interface between Immobilized Enzymes and Random Copolymer Brushes

Hector Sanchez-Moran et al.

Summary: "The long-term goal of biotechnology is to develop design rules for stabilizing enzymes when immobilized to materials. By investigating the stabilization of lipases immobilized on PEGMA and SBMA copolymer brush surfaces, it was found that the stability of the lipases at elevated temperatures depended on the fraction of PEGMA in the brush layer. This understanding can lead to the rational tuning of enzyme-material interfaces for reliable ruggedization of enzymes under extreme conditions."
