Unexpected kinetic behavior of structured Pd/CeO2-ZrO2 toward undesired ammonia formation and consumption during nitrites reduction: Role of the reactivity of oxygen from ceria

J. P. Dacquin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the kinetics of successive ammonia production and consumption during the catalytic water denitrification process over Pd/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts. The fast conversion of nitrites to ammonium ions is found to be weakly dependent on palladium particle size, while subsequent slow consumption of ammonia in anaerobic conditions highlights the importance of ammonia oxidation reaction with a pseudo rate constant depending on the surface coverage of reactive oxygen from ceria. The study emphasizes the significance of the synthesis route of CexZr1-xO2 and its peculiar interaction with Pd in the overall reaction kinetics.

Coordination environments tune the activity of oxygen catalysis on single atom catalysts: A computational study

Gaofan Xiao et al.

Summary: By utilizing density functional theory calculations, this research systematically studied the ORR/OER performances of nitrogen-coordinated transition metal carbon materials and found that asymmetric tri-coordinated catalysts, particularly NiN3-C, exhibit stronger catalytic intermediate adsorption capacity and lower overpotential, making them highly efficient bifunctional catalysts for oxygen catalysis. The enhanced effect is attributed to additional orbital interaction, as evidenced by changes in d-band center and integral crystal orbital Hamilton population. This study not only provides a potential bifunctional oxygen catalyst, but also enriches knowledge in coordination engineering for tailoring the activity of single-atom catalysts.

Opportunities and Challenges in Electrolytic Propylene Epoxidation

Hao Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals the potential of electrolytic propylene oxidation for synthesizing propylene oxide through methods such as density functional theory. The research shows that propylene epoxidation is facile on weak-binding catalysts if reactive atomic oxygen preexists, and electrolytic epoxidation can provide atomic oxygen without overwhelming the epoxidation process with hydroperoxyl formation. Additionally, propylene dehydrogenation competes with the epoxidation process and may lead to the formation of side products.

Yan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, flower-like mesoporous magnesium silicate composites (MMSCs) were successfully synthesized using a self-templating strategy. The microstructures and specific surface areas of MMSCs were investigated, and it was found that the synthesized MMSCs exhibited a high adsorption capacity for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). The results indicated that the flower morphology and mesoporous structure of MMSCs provided a large surface area with multiple available adsorption sites, enabling effective bonding with AFB1.

Summary: The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for fuel cell performance, with TMOs offering operational stability but lower activity compared to Pt-based electrocatalysts. The challenges in finding TMOs with high ORR activity lie in weaker oxygen binding on TMO surfaces and stronger electric field effects, making O-O bond breaking difficult. Experimental screening of 7,798 unique TMO compositions confirmed their lower activity compared to Pt.

Comparing electrocatalytic and thermocatalytic conversion of nitrate on platinum-ruthenium alloys

Zixuan Wang et al.

Summary: The study compares thermocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes for converting nitrate to nitrogen or ammonia on the same catalyst surface, finding that catalyst activity is correlated with hydrogen and nitrate adsorption energies. PtRu catalysts are shown to be more active for nitrate reduction than Pt, and the effects of pH on reaction rates are significantly different between the two processes, indicating electrochemical-specific steps differentiate them. The cost effectiveness and capability of approaching commercial ammonia production rates are analyzed for both processes.
