Quaternary Ammonium Salts: Insights into Synthesis and New Directions in Antibacterial Applications

Zhenyang Zhou et al.

Summary: The overuse of antibiotics has resulted in the increase of antibiotic-resistant genes in bacteria. To combat this issue, a fungicide with a different antibacterial mechanism from antibiotics is needed. Quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) have shown promise as they have good antibacterial properties and can reduce the likelihood of bacteria developing drug resistance. This review focuses on the synthesis and application of different types of QASs and provides insight into their structure-function relationships, aiming to explore more applications of QASs in antimicrobial research for clinical use.

Clinical longevity of extensive direct resin composite restorations after amalgam replacement with a mean follow-up of 15 years

Jelte W. Hofsteenge et al.

Summary: The aim of this retrospective clinical study was to determine the survival of extensive direct resin composite restorations after amalgam replacement on vital molars and premolars after a mean observation period of 15 years. The results showed a cumulative success rate of 62% after a mean observation time of 163.4 months and a cumulative survival rate of 74.7% after a mean observation time of 179.1 months. Premolars with two cusps replaced had a 297% higher chance of failure than premolars with one cusp replaced.

Summary: Three bi-quaternary ammonium methacrylates (biQAMA-12, biQAMA-14, and biQAMA-16) were synthesized and incorporated into dental resin composites (DRCs) as antibacterial agents. The addition of these agents did not negatively affect the physicochemical properties of DRCs. The results showed that the antibacterial rate of DRCs containing these agents was higher than 90%.
