Microswimmers from Toposelective Nanoparticle Attachment

Maximilian R. Bailey et al.

Summary: A new method for fabricating microswimmers using photocatalytic nanoparticles and microparticles was demonstrated, allowing for the production of large quantities of photo-responsive active Janus particles. The resulting microswimmers exhibit unique 3D active motion under UV illumination, laying the groundwork for designer microswimmers that can catalyze a broad range of chemical reactions for potential future applications.

Microswimmers from Scalable Galvanic Displacement

Maximilian R. Bailey et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method that combines Pickering-wax emulsion technique with galvanic electrochemistry to produce large quantities of Pt-SiO2 Janus microswimmers. By using copper as a templating material, the synthesis time, material costs, and toxic waste could potentially be reduced, and the methodology could be extended to a range of functional materials in the future. This electrochemical approach offers exciting opportunities for overcoming current limitations in microswimmer synthesis and advancing their development.

Roughness induced rotational slowdown near the colloidal glass transition

Beybin Ilhan et al.

Summary: In concentrated suspensions, the dynamics of colloids are strongly influenced by the shape and topographical surface characteristics of the particles, particularly the surface roughness altering the Brownian motions. Experimental findings show that roughness not only affects the concentration of colloidal glass transition, but also leads to changes in rotational Brownian motion.

Tracking Janus microswimmers in 3D with machine learning

Maximilian Robert Bailey et al.

Summary: Advancements in artificial active matter systems heavily rely on our ability to characterise their motion. Yet, the most widely used tool to analyse the latter is standard wide-field microscopy, which is largely limited to the study of two-dimensional motion. This study presents a Machine Learning approach that uses labelled training data to track Janus microswimmers in three dimensions, demonstrating the effectiveness of ensemble Decision Tree-based models in tracking particles over a volume spanning more than 40 μm.

Observation of liquid glass in suspensions of ellipsoidal colloids

Joerg Roller et al.

Summary: Using confocal microscopy of fluorescently labeled core-shell particles, this study reveals that suspensions of ellipsoidal colloids form a liquid glass state where rotations are frozen while translations remain fluid. Image analysis uncovers previously unknown nematic precursors as characteristic structural elements of this state.

Objective comparison of methods to decode anomalous diffusion

Gorka Munoz-Gil et al.

Summary: Deviations from Brownian motion leading to anomalous diffusion are commonly found in transport dynamics, but challenging to characterize. An open competition comparing different approaches for single trajectory analysis showed that machine learning methods outperform classical approaches.

The effect of morphology and particle-wall interaction on colloidal near-wall dynamics

J. Alejandro Rivera-Moran et al.

Summary: The near-wall Brownian dynamics of different types of colloidal particles were investigated, revealing that rough particles diffuse significantly slower compared to smooth particles. This difference in dynamics is attributed to the rough particles significantly changing their DLVO interaction with the wall, affecting their diffusion.
