Dielectric properties and stratigraphy of regolith in the lunar South Pole-Aitken basin: Observations from the Lunar Penetrating Radar

Jianqing Feng et al.

Summary: This study examines the dielectric properties and stratigraphy of lunar regolith on the far side of the moon using data obtained from the Chang'E-4 mission. The results indicate that the regolith in the landing site is composed of fine-grained, low-loss material that is more homogeneous than previous research areas. The study also identifies a series of impact events, with the top layer primarily consisting of ejecta from a large crater located 140 km away.

The gardening process of lunar regolith by small impact craters: A case study in Chang'E-4 landing area

Ke Shi et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively analyzed the evolution of lunar regolith and applied it to the landing area of the Chang'E-4 probe on the farside of the Moon. The research found that larger impact events control the formation of lunar regolith, while the overturning and mixing of lunar regolith on the surface are mainly caused by smaller impact events. The results also suggest that most of the lunar regolith formed before 3.0 billion years ago due to a high impact flux during that time.

Explanations for Unusual Seasonal Variations in Chang'E-2 Microwave Radiometer Datasets of Lunar Double-Shaded Permanently Shadowed Regions

Wenchao Zheng et al.

Summary: Understanding the temperature variations of PSRs on the Moon is crucial for water ice exploration. The study found seasonal temperature variations in PSRs using Chang'E-2 and Diviner Lunar radiometer data. Unusual microwave brightness temperature variations were also observed in double-shaded PSRs during a specific period, which were explained using thermal and microwave radiation transfer models. The study concludes that the unusual microwave brightness temperature changes were caused by a calibration problem, and a statistical correction method was used to obtain the proper brightness temperature trend.

A Global Thermal Conductivity Model for Lunar Regolith at Low Temperatures

A. Martinez et al.

Summary: This study introduces a global thermal conductivity model that can better explain the temperature trends in polar regions of the Moon, providing more accurate theoretical support for the Diviner experiment. Additionally, the model shows higher subsurface temperatures and steeper geothermal gradients.

Reconciling the Infrared and Microwave Observations of the Lunar South Pole: A Study on Subsurface Temperature and Regolith Density

Jianqing Feng et al.

Summary: By comparing measurements from different instruments on different lunar orbiters, this study reveals differences in thermal properties of lunar regolith between permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) and non-PSRs, further confirming that the regolith in PSRs has lower thermal conductivity and higher porosity than non-PSRs.

Properties of Lunar Regolith on the Moon's Farside Unveiled by Chang'E-4 Lunar Penetrating Radar

Zehua Dong et al.

Summary: The study using the CE-4 Lunar Penetrating Radar revealed the subsurface structure and properties of regolith materials on the Moon's farside, showing that the regolith thickness is around 12 meters with a relative permittivity of 2.35, lower than that on the nearside. The results suggest that local surface materials on the farside have less attenuation for radiowave, explaining the greater penetrating depth of CE-4 LPR compared to CE-3 LPR.
