Attosecond field emission

H. Y. Kim et al.

Summary: Field emission of electrons is essential for advancements in science and technology, allowing for higher frequency signal processing and atomic-scale imaging. The use of intense laser pulses has enabled confinement and control of optical field emission, but the measurement of attosecond electron pulses has been challenging. In this study, intense sub-cycle light transients were used to induce and investigate the dynamics of electron pulses, providing new opportunities for research in attosecond physics and nano-optics.

Characterization of an aerosolized nanoparticle beam beyond the diffraction limit through strong field ionization

Michael Davino et al.

Summary: The study of nanomaterials is important for both technological applications and fundamental science. This study presents a new technique using strong field ionization to characterize nanoparticle beams, which provides direct access to nanoparticle density and allows for optimization of particle beams for specific applications. The technique is effective in detecting spherical nanoparticles as small as 10 nm in diameter.

Strong-Field Control of Plasmonic Properties in Core-Shell Nanoparticles

Jeffrey A. Powell et al.

Summary: In this work, we demonstrate that precise control of the plasmonic response can be achieved solely by adjusting the incident intensity using intense, femtosecond laser fields. The plasmonic properties of Au/SiO2 nanoshells are manipulated by exploiting the nonlinear refractive index of gold and verified by observing the photoelectron energy spectrum.

Strong-field ionization of plasmonic nanoparticles

E. Saydanzad et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the strong-field ionization of metal nanoparticles by intense infrared laser pulses. Our results show that the momentum distributions of photoelectrons from nanoparticles are influenced by various factors, including the Coulomb repulsion between electrons, residual charge effects, and laser-induced plasmonic fields.

Alignment dependence of photoelectron angular distributions in the few-photon ionization of molecules by ultraviolet pulses

Huynh Van Sa Lam et al.

Summary: We investigate the ionization dynamics of rotational wave packets of N2, CO2, and C2H4 using broadband ultraviolet pulses. The photoelectron momentum distributions show a strong dependence on alignment, multiphoton order, and the electronic and vibrational states of the cation. We demonstrate that substantial information about the molecular-frame photoelectron angular distribution can be obtained from the laboratory-frame asymmetry parameters without prior knowledge of the photoionization process. We also compare few-photon ionization with one-photon ionization and strong-field ionization.

Terahertz Scanning Tunneling Microscopy for Visualizing Ultrafast Electron Motion in Nanoscale Potential Variations

Shoji Yoshida et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ultrafast electron dynamics in nanoscale structures, using time-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy combined with a carrier-envelope phase-controlled subcycle THz electric field. The research successfully visualized electron motion triggered by variation in the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and distinguished effects of molecular defects with single-molecular-level spatial resolution. This method is expected to play a vital role in evaluating local electronic structures and dynamics for the development of future functional materials and devices.

Enhanced extreme ultraviolet high-harmonic generation from chromium-doped magnesium oxide

V. E. Nefedova et al.

Summary: Doping-induced defects in crystals enhance high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral region, leading to increased harmonic yield. Experimental and numerical simulation results show that doped magnesium oxide (MgO) has a higher XUV high harmonic yield compared to undoped MgO and maintains the crystal's symmetry.

Onset of charge interaction in strong-field photoemission from nanometric needle tips

Johannes Schoetz et al.

Summary: Research on photoemission and photocurrents from nano-sized tungsten needle tips exposed to controlled laser fields revealed a rapid increase in emitted electron energies beyond a certain intensity threshold, indicating the onset of charge interaction dominated photoemission dynamics. This finding may also be relevant for photoemission from other nanostructures and PHz-scale devices.
