Microbiopsy Sampling for Examining Age-Related Differences in Skeletal Muscle Fiber Morphology and Composition

Garrett M. Hester et al.

Summary: This study compared muscle fiber morphology and composition between young and older males using the microbiopsy technique. It was found that older males had lower peak torque and smaller whole-muscle CSA, but no muscle atrophy at the single fiber level. The CSA of type I fibers was larger in older males, resulting in a smaller type II/I fiber CSA ratio. Serum CAF levels were not associated with age, specific strength, or whole-muscle CSA in older males.

Associations of alpha-actinin-3 genotype with thigh muscle volume and physical performance in older adults with sarcopenia or pre-sarcopenia

Yuto Kiuchi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship of the ACTN3 genotype with thigh muscle volume and physical performance in older adults with sarcopenia or pre-sarcopenia. The X allele of the ACTN3 genotype was associated with decreased thigh muscle volume compared to the RR genotype in older adults with sarcopenia or pre-sarcopenia.

TRPV6 is a potential regulator of bone resorption in bone loss induced by estrogen deficiency

Jun Ma et al.

Summary: This study found that TRPV6 plays a significant role in estrogen (E2)-mediated osteoclast function, as Trpv6 depletion blocks the inhibitory effects of E2 on bone resorption activity. E2 regulates Trpv6 transcription through ER alpha in interaction with C/EBP beta and NF-kappa B. Chip assay analysis revealed the specific binding regions of C/EBP beta and NF-kappa B in the Trpv6 promoter.

Redox Signaling and Sarcopenia: Searching for the Primary Suspect

Nicholas A. Foreman et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and function, is influenced by various etiological mechanisms including reactive oxygen species generation, protein turnover, cell death, and mitochondrial homeostasis. As age advances, dysregulation of redox signaling and mitochondrial function may play crucial roles in the development of sarcopenia.

Knockdown of CENPK inhibits cell growth and facilitates apoptosis via PTEN-PI3K-AKT signalling pathway in gastric cancer

Shusheng Wu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that CENPK is overexpressed in gastric cancer and may promote gastric carcinogenesis through the PTEN-PI3K-AKT signaling pathway, indicating it as a potential target for cancer therapeutics in GC.

Pan-Cancer Analysis of PIMREG as a Biomarker for the Prognostic and Immunological Role

Hua Zhu et al.

Summary: PIMREG is highly expressed in at least 24 types of cancer and is negatively correlated with prognosis in major cancer types. It is associated with TMB and MSI in various cancers and can influence the etiology or pathogenesis of cancer by acting on immune-related pathways and chemokine signaling pathways.

Differential gene expression profile by RNA sequencing study of elderly osteoporotic hip fracture patients with sarcopenia

Yang-Jae Kang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to report the RNA sequencing profile of elderly patients with osteoporotic hip fracture with or without sarcopenia, identifying a key genetic factor candidate for sarcopenia-induced hip fracture in elderly individuals with osteoporosis. Through RNA sequencing and qPCR validation, important genes related to osteosarcopenia were identified, along with potential therapeutic targets for sarcopenia in elderly osteoporosis patients.
