Aqueous phase catalytic hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over in-situ synthesized Cu-Zn/SiO2 catalysts

Jinxin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study focused on synthesizing Cu-based catalysts supported on SiO2 for the hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol, with the in-situ synthesized Cu-Zn/SiO2-IS catalyst showing excellent performance. The addition of Zn species not only improved the reduction of CuO and dispersion of metal Cu, but also effectively prevented decarbonylation, leading to higher selectivity for furfuryl alcohol. The in-situ synthesized catalyst has great potential for industrial applications.

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Depth Profiling of As-Grown and Annealed Titanium Nitride Thin Films

Monzer Maarouf et al.

Summary: In this study, titanium nitride thin films were grown on Si(001) and fused silica substrates by radio frequency reactive magnetron sputtering, followed by post-growth annealing at different temperatures in nitrogen ambient. The films annealed at temperatures above 300 degrees C showed higher surface roughness, smaller grain size, better crystallinity, and decreased bandgap. Hall effect measurements indicated n-type conductivity in all films, with high carrier concentration that slightly increased with annealing temperature. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the formation of Ti-N bond and the presence of chemisorbed oxygen in the films, with annealing in nitrogen ambient resulting in increased nitrogen vacancies and non-stoichiometric TiN films.

The same chemical state of carbon gives rise to two peaks in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

G. Greczynski et al.

Summary: Chemical state analysis in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) relies on assigning well-defined binding energy values to core level electrons originating from atoms in particular bonding configurations. Here, direct evidence is presented for the violation of this paradigm, as the C 1s peak due to C-C/C-H bonded atoms from adventitious carbon (AdC) layers splits into two distinctly different contributions. This finding exposes fundamental problems with the reliability of reported XPS data and suggests discontinuing the use of adventitious carbon in XPS.
