Summary: Solar-driven bioelectrosynthesis is a promising method for converting abundant resources into value-added chemicals using renewable energy. A biohybrid coculture involving acetogen Sporomusa ovata and diazotrophic Rhodopseudomonas palustris has been designed for tandem and tunable CO2 and N-2 fixation. This coculture platform provides a robust ecosystem for continuous CO2 and N-2 fixation, and its outputs can be directed by substrate gas composition. The ability to electrochemically manipulate bacterial communities allows for the expansion of CO2 and N-2 bioelectrosynthesis products.

A two-stage process for the autotrophic and mixotrophic conversion of C1 gases into bacterial cellulose

Yu Kang et al.

Summary: Gas fermentation is a well-established process that can convert greenhouse gases into valuable multi-carbon chemicals. In this study, a two-stage process was developed to expand the product range of gas fermentation and synthesize a versatile biopolymer called bacterial cellulose (BC). The process involved cultivating acetogen Clostridium autoethanogenum to produce ethanol and acetate in the first stage, and then using BC-synthesizing Komagataeibacter sucrofermentans to grow in the spent medium from gas fermentation and produce BC in the second stage. The results showed that BC can be efficiently produced from gases and has unique properties.
