Impacts of Climate Change and Heat Stress on Farmworkers' Health: A Scoping Review

Moussa El Khayat et al.

Summary: Due to climate change, global temperatures are rising continuously, leading to an increase in heatwaves. This puts workers in the food production industry, particularly farmworkers, at a higher risk of heat stress. A scoping review was conducted to summarize the existing knowledge on the health impacts of climate change and heat stress, guide future research, and inform policies to protect the health and safety of agricultural workers. The review found various risk and protective factors, and emphasized the need for further research on vulnerable agricultural communities, including migrant workers.

Kidney complications of parasitic diseases

Elizabeth De Francesco Daher et al.

Summary: Parasitic diseases have been known to cause kidney damage and can lead to increased mortality. Chagas disease, filariasis, leishmaniasis, malaria, and schistosomiasis are important parasitic diseases that can affect the kidney. The mechanisms of kidney injury include direct parasite damage, immune phenomena, and systemic manifestations. Early diagnosis and proper management are crucial for preventing kidney disease progression and optimizing patient recovery.

The burden of chronic kidney disease in Asia, 1990-2019: Examination of estimates from global burden of disease 2019 study

Aashima et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant burden in the Asian region, particularly in resource-constrained countries. Strategies such as raising awareness, screening high-risk individuals, providing cost-effective therapies, and increasing healthcare coverage can help address the CKD epidemic in Asia.

Impact of Chronic Kidney Disease on Brain Structure and Function

Emily J. Steinbach et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects both adult and pediatric patients and can lead to neurocognitive dysfunction, particularly in executive function. The exact mechanism for this is not known, but the multisystemic effects of CKD on the brain may play a role. Neuroimaging modalities, such as MRI, can provide insight into the neurobiological basis of cognitive dysfunction in CKD. While adult patients with CKD show differences in brain structure, less is known about the impact on neurodevelopment in pediatric patients. Future research should focus on identifying modifiable risk factors for abnormal brain structure and function in both pediatric and adult CKD populations.

Task shifting for point of care ultrasound in primary healthcare in low- and middle-income countries-a systematic review

Seth Kofi Abrokwa et al.

Summary: This review examines the benefits and challenges of task shifting for point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in primary healthcare settings in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). The findings suggest that task shifting for POCUS has the potential to expand diagnostic imaging capacity and improve patient management and outcomes. However, high training costs, poor electricity and internet connectivity remain significant barriers to successful implementation.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant global burden associated with higher morbidity and mortality, especially among individuals with lower socioeconomic status. Despite the availability of guidelines for evaluating and managing early CKD, there is still a lack of consensus on prioritizing early identification and intervention for CKD without incentives or quality measures.

Evaluating chronic kidney disease in rural South Africa: comparing estimated glomerular filtration rate using point-of-care creatinine to iohexol measured GFR

Sean Currin et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of point-of-care technologies for serum creatinine measurement compared to the gold standard measurement using iohexol measured GFR. Results showed that POC devices had better performance than the laboratory Jaffe method, but suffered from imprecision and significant bias. The study highlights the need for laboratories to transition to enzymatic methods for measuring creatinine.

Summary: In LMICs, real-world data suggest improvement in screening and treatment for kidney disease in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes attending non-nephrology clinics, accompanied by decreasing proportions of patients with microalbuminuria and proteinuria, with fewer patients reported receiving dialysis over a 12-year period.

Summary: The study reveals that CKD is a significant public health challenge in South Asia, with a prevalence rate of 14% in the general population. Among high-risk populations, the prevalence rates were higher, such as 27% in adults with hypertension and 31% in adults with diabetes. The study also found a prevalence rate of 8% for CKD of unknown origin in the endemic population of South Asia.

Summary: The burden of chronic kidney disease is increasing globally, especially in low- and lower-middle-income countries where access to treatment is poor. Developed healthcare systems are better equipped to handle the treatment of CKD compared to developing countries. Availability of data plays a crucial role in understanding disease burden and ensuring effective investments in treatments and healthcare resources.
