Occurrence, distribution and risk assessment of antibiotics at various aquaculture stages in typical aquaculture areas surrounding the Yellow Sea

Jiachao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of antibiotics at different aquaculture stages in two typical marine aquaculture areas surrounding the Yellow Sea. The study found that the concentration of antibiotics was highest in aquaculture ponds at the late aquaculture stage. The pollution level in natural water was directly related to the aquaculture stages. The study also revealed that the selection pressure of antibiotics on resistant bacteria and the ecological risks to aquatic organisms increased with the development of aquaculture stages.

A microscopic survey on microplastics in beverages: the case of beer, mineral water and tea

Yinan Li et al.

Summary: It has been reported that microplastics are ubiquitous in water and land environments, and they are also commonly found in daily foods with high consumption. Global surveys have found that various beverages, including beer, mineral water, and tea, are all contaminated with microplastics. The shape and type of microplastics vary, and possible sources of contamination include raw materials, atmosphere, tools, and containers. The adsorption of heavy metals and antibiotics to microplastics in beverages may pose health risks. Therefore, efforts should be made to eliminate and remove microplastics from food.

Weathering pathways and protocols for environmentally relevant microplastics and nanoplastics: What are we missing?

Olubukola S. Alimi et al.

Summary: Most studies on microplastics have been conducted using pristine particles, neglecting the effects of weathering. Current weathering protocols are not sufficient for microplastics research. There is a need to use environmentally relevant microplastics and critically assess the appropriateness of weathering methods in future research efforts.

Nitrogen plasma-mediated deposition of silver onto MoS2 towards robust nanozyme with enhanced catalysis for colorimetric assay of hydrogen sulfide in aquaculture water

Sheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Ultra-thin MoS2 nanosheets were treated by nitrogen plasma to deposit silver and form N/Ag@MoS2 nanozymes for the detection of hydrogen sulfide in aquaculture water. The N/Ag@MoS2 nanozymes showed significantly enhanced catalytic activity and could react with H2S at different concentrations. This study provides a new strategy for the design of nanozymes for various applications in biomedical, food, and environmental monitoring fields.

Human daily dietary intakes of antibiotic residues: Dominant sources and health risks

Yujie Ben et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluates the exposure sources and analyzes nearly 100 antibiotics, finding residues of 58 antibiotic compounds in drinking water and 49 in food samples from Shenzhen, China. Daily intake of antibiotics through plant-derived food consumption was found to be the main source, posing potentially unacceptable health risks for norfloxacin, lincomycin, and cipmfloxacin. Further research is needed to address food safety concerns related to antibiotic residues in plant-derived and animal-derived food products.

Microplastics exposure as an emerging threat to ancient lineage: A contaminant of concern for abnormal bending of amphioxus via neurotoxicity

Keyu Xiang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the evident accumulation of polyethylene microplastics in amphioxus after exposure, which results in abnormal body-bending phenotype and muscle dysfunction. The mechanistic insight reveals histological damages, oxidative damage, metabolic disorder, and neurotoxicity caused by microplastics exposure. These findings highlight the potential impact of microplastics not only on amphioxus but also on other marine organisms and human beings through marine food chains.

DNA Nanostructure-Programmed Cell Entry via Corner Angle-Mediated Molecular Interaction with Membrane Receptors

Xueyu Peng et al.

Summary: This study finds that different framework nucleic acids have varying cellular uptake efficiency, and this distinction is consistent across multiple cell lines. Scavenger receptors play a crucial role in mediating the uptake process, and molecular docking simulations show that their binding depends on the corner angle of the framework nucleic acids, which determines the frequency of cellular internalization.

Plastics in the Earth system

Aron Stubbins et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution has become a global issue, prompting us to consider plastics as emergent geomaterials never before seen in Earth's history. With high carbon content, plastics can rival natural organic carbon in some ecosystems, prompting geochemists to include plastics in their analyses to expedite understanding of plastics in the Earth system. Furthermore, plastics can serve as global-scale tracers to advance Earth system science.
