A one-pot synthesis of oligo(arylene-ethynylene)-molecular wires and their use in the further verification of molecular circuit laws

Masnun Naher et al.

Summary: This study presents a convenient two-step, one-pot synthesis of oligo(arylene-ethynylene) (OAE) molecular wires. The method avoids the multi-step preparation and purification of terminal alkynes. The experimental data suggest that the molecular conductance of the wires is better correlated with the nature of the anchor group rather than the degree of aromaticity of the molecular core.

Increased Molecular Conductance in Oligo[n]phenylene Wires by Thermally Enhanced Dihedral Planarization

Woojung Lee et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that dynamic molecular structures lead to temperature-dependent conductance in molecular wires. Thermally activated dihedral rotations increase the probability of molecular wires being in a planar conformation, enhancing tunneling probability. Longer molecular wires with more rotational pivot points exhibit larger temperature dependence on conductance.

Molecular Structure-(Thermo)electric Property Relationships in Single-Molecule Junctions and Comparisons with Single- and Multiple-Parameter Models

Masnun Naher et al.

Summary: The conductance of a series of 12 conjugated molecular wires, including 6 with ruthenium or platinum center, has been determined. The transmission through these wires is mainly through tunneling at the tail of the HOMO resonance near the middle of the HOMO-LUMO gap. The trends in molecular conductance across the series cannot be explained solely by single-parameter models, but require consideration of the complete molecular junction.

Transition between Nonresonant and Resonant Charge Transport in Molecular Junctions

Songsong Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that molecular junctions undergo a reversible transition from nonresonant tunneling to resonant transport as a function of applied bias, which is related to the molecular frontier orbital energies and electrode Fermi levels. Through transient bias-switching experiments, the reversible nature of this transition is revealed.

A review of functional linear carbon chains (oligoynes, polyynes, cumulenes) and their applications as molecular wires in molecular electronics and optoelectronics

Martin R. Bryce

Summary: Linear, sp-hybridised, 1-dimensional all-carbon wires, such as functional oligoynes and polyynes, have unique and versatile structural properties, making them promising materials for molecular electronics and optoelectronics. These carbon nanostructures, with at least two contiguous acetylene units, offer tailored electronic and photophysical properties through judicious selection of end-groups, alkyne units, and incorporation of metal atoms. However, the practical application limit for oligoynes is generally four to six contiguous triple bonds, due to synthetic challenges and instability of longer homologues, highlighting the need for next-generation linear, sp-hybridised, all-carbon molecular wires with new properties.
