Multiple Antimicrobial Effects of Hybrid Peptides Synthesized Based on the Sequence of Ribosomal S1 Protein from Staphylococcus aureus

Sergey V. Kravchenko et al.

Summary: The need to develop new antimicrobial peptides is essential due to the high resistance of pathogenic bacteria to traditional antibiotics. This study successfully creates hybrid antimicrobial peptides containing amyloidogenic regions of the ribosomal S1 protein, showing significant antimicrobial effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Secondary Structure Transitions for a Family of Amyloidogenic, Antimicrobial Uperin 3 Peptides in Contact with Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate

Anup K. Prasad et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural changes of antimicrobial and amyloidogenic peptides in the presence of a membrane mimetic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The results show that the peptides display increased stability and a tendency towards alpha-helical structures in the presence of SDS.

Amyloidogenic Peptides: New Class of Antimicrobial Peptides with the Novel Mechanism of Activity

Oxana Galzitskaya et al.

Summary: Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a leading cause of death worldwide. The researchers have developed and tested peptides with a new mechanism of antimicrobial action based on directed co-aggregation. They found that these peptides have antimicrobial effects on various bacteria, including E. coli, T. thermophilus, P. aeruginosa, and S. aureus, making them potential candidates for combating hospital infections.

The amphibian antimicrobial peptide uperin 3.5 is a cross-α/cross-β chameleon functional amyloid

Nir Salinas et al.

Summary: The study found that two subtypes of antimicrobial peptide uperin 3.5 can form functional amyloid fibrils, which has important physiological implications. Uperin 3.5 mainly forms cross-beta fibrils in the absence of lipids, but helical fibril formation is induced by bacterial cells or membrane mimetics, leading to membrane damage and cell death.

Is It Possible to Create Antimicrobial Peptides Based on the Amyloidogenic Sequence of Ribosomal S1 Protein of P. aeruginosa?

Sergei Y. Grishin et al.

Summary: The development and testing of new antimicrobial peptides, including a unique hybrid peptide combining membrane penetrating peptide and amyloidogenic peptide segments, showed promise in inhibiting the growth of pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The study demonstrated antibacterial activity comparable to gentamicin sulfate, with no toxicity to eukaryotic cells, indicating the potential for new antimicrobial drug development against P. aeruginosa using these hybrid peptides.
