Plastid phylogenomics shed light on intergeneric relationships and spatiotemporal evolutionary history of Melocanninae (Poaceae: Bambusoideae)

Meng-Yuan Zhou et al.

Summary: Melocanninae is a subtribe of Paleotropical woody bamboos with over 90 species mainly found in Asia. This study filled the gaps in plastome data of Melocanninae, reconstructed its phylogeny, estimated divergence time and ancestral distribution range. The results showed that the two major genera, Cephalostachyum and Schizostachyum, were paraphyletic. Different plastid regions provided inconsistent signals for the relationship between Melocanna and Pseudostachyum. It was inferred that Melocanninae originated in the East Himalaya to northern Myanmar in the early Miocene and dispersed to different regions through multiple routes.

Parallel ddRAD and Genome Skimming Analyses Reveal a Radiative and Reticulate Evolutionary History of the Temperate Bamboos

Cen Guo et al.

Summary: The study used ddRAD data and chloroplast genomes to investigate the phylogeny of the tribe Arundinarieae, revealing five major lineages, two of which correspond to distinct rhizome morphologies. Time-calibrated ddRAD tree showed rapid diversification of Arundinarieae around the mid-Miocene, coinciding with the intensification of the East Asian monsoon.

Plastid phylogenomic insights into relationships of all flowering plant families

Hong-Tao Li et al.

Summary: The study compiled the largest dataset of angiosperm plastomes to date, resulting in a phylogenetic tree that is largely congruent with previous plastid genomic analyses but with greater clade support. The research provided strong resolution for many interordinal and interfamilial relationships within core eudicots, but relationships among the five major clades of Mesangiospermae remain unresolved despite increased sampling.

Phylogenomics of Fargesia and Yushania reveals a history of reticulate evolution

Xia-Ying Ye et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the phylogenetic signals of genomic regions in bamboo species from the Himalaya-Hengduan region, revealing that the genetic variation of chloroplast DNA is correlated with geographical distribution, indicating that reticulate evolution is the main cause of phylogenetic incongruence between nuclear and chloroplast datasets. The findings suggest that genomes with different inheritance patterns can provide insights into distinct evolutionary histories of species, and imply that reticulate evolution is prevalent in rapidly diversifying groups.

Two new species of Yushania (Poaceae: Bambusoideae) from South China, with a taxonomic revision of related species

Xia-Ying Ye et al.

Summary: Two new species of Yushania from Hunan, China, namely Yushania longshanensis and Yushania stoloniforma, are described in this article. They are distinguished by differences in culm diameter, leaf blade size, and secondary veins. Additionally, two synonyms were addressed and renamed in the study.
