Men's decrease and women's increase in harmful alcohol use from the 2014 to 2018 national surveys in Taiwan: A harbinger for an emerging national trend in East Asia?

Yu-Chieh Huang et al.

Summary: By comparing survey data from Taiwan in 2014 and 2018, it was found that there has been a convergence of gender differences in alcohol use. While men showed a decrease in all three alcohol use behaviors, women exhibited an increase in harmful alcohol use, particularly among those aged 18-29 years. These findings have important implications for intervention and prevention of problematic alcohol use in East Asia.

Time Trends in Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Incidence from 2002 to 2016 in Taiwan: An Age-Period-Cohort Analysis

Yu-Tsung Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the trends in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in Taiwan from 2002 to 2016 and found that the incidence of both diseases is associated with older age and early birth cohorts. The results suggest that elderly individuals in Taiwan may be at a higher risk of developing new-onset psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Incidence, Prevalence, and Mortality of People with Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis in Taiwan: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Ireny Y. K. Iskandar et al.

Summary: This study used Taiwan National Health Insurance claim records to examine changes in the prevalence, incidence, and mortality rates of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in Taiwan over 12 years. The prevalence of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis increased steadily, while the incidence rates remained stable. Despite a decreasing trend in all-cause mortality rates for both groups, patients with psoriasis had a higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to the general population.

Lifetime Risks, Life Expectancy, and Health Care Expenditures for Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Nationwide Cohort Followed Up From 2003 to 2016

Ying-Ming Chiu et al.

Summary: The study estimated the incidence rate of rheumatoid arthritis and associated health care expenditures in Taiwan. A total of 29,352 new RA cases were identified during 2003-2016, with a decreasing trend in cumulative incidence rate for both sexes. The average life expectancy after RA diagnosis was 26.3 years, with an average lifetime cost of $72,953. Women with RA had a higher loss of life expectancy than men, leading to higher lifetime expenditures.

Pustular Psoriasis: From Pathophysiology to Treatment

Giovanni Genovese et al.

Summary: Pustular psoriasis is a clinicopathological entity with different variants characterized by sterile pustules on an erythematous base, showing intense inflammatory response and involvement of the IL-36 axis. Due to the rarity and heterogeneity of PP forms, data on prognosis and therapeutic management are limited, leading to ongoing debates on the diagnosis and treatment of PP.

Long-term Outcomes and Prognosis in New-Onset Psoriasis

Axel Svedbom et al.

Summary: This study found that clinical characteristics and activating genes in the IL-23 pathway are significantly associated with the clinical course of psoriasis, and joint pain and peripheral enthesitis may indicate the probability of PsA. Patients within those categories merit specialist referral and closer follow-up. The possibility of modifying the disease course with early systemic intervention should be tested.
