Intercomparison of joint bias correction methods for precipitation and flow from a hydrological perspective

Kue Bum Kim et al.

Summary: The study proposed an integrated framework combining bias correction of regional climate model precipitation and simulated flow from rainfall-runoff model, considering the uncertainty in distribution function parameters. Four different bias correction approaches were explored to reduce systematic biases in flow simulated by hydrological models using RCM precipitation as input. The Case-4 model, which corrects RCM precipitation and flow by preserving their natural variabilities, showed the best performance in terms of bias correction and spread of flow ensemble from a hydrological perspective.

Multivariate Bias-Correction of High-Resolution Regional Climate Change Simulations for West Africa: Performance and Climate Change Implications

Diarra Dieng et al.

Summary: A multivariate bias correction technique (MBCn) based on N-dimensional probability density function transform is applied to high-resolution regional climate change simulations, correcting the biases in key meteorological variables. The study investigates the impact of bias correction on the historical period, inter-variable relationships, and spatio-temporal consistency. Results show successful correction of seasonal biases and inter-variable correlations, suggesting the potential benefits of MBCn for future scenarios. The model ensemble mean demonstrates significant changes in rainfall, relative humidity, wind speed, and maximum summer temperature in different regions.

Reduction of the uncertainties in the hydrological projections in Korean river basins using dynamically downscaled climate projections

Liying Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of higher-resolution climate data on hydrological projections and finds that high-resolution dynamical downscaling can reduce uncertainty in projected hydrological change, specifically in South Korea where there will be intensified runoff under warming conditions. This exploration is valuable for hydroclimate studies and climate change impact assessment.

Characterizing non-stationary compound extreme events in a changing climate based on large-ensemble climate simulations

Harsimrenjit Singh et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the dependence structure of temperature-precipitation compound events in Canada using different datasets and copula models. It found that bias-corrected climate simulations better represent extreme values compared to raw model outputs. Considering the dependence structure reduced joint return periods significantly, especially in winter and summer, highlighting the importance of analyzing compound extremes rather than individual temperature and precipitation extremes. The non-stationarity of the dependence structure under climate change could play a significant role in future compound extreme events.

A Novel Spatial Downscaling Approach for Climate Change Assessment in Regions With Sparse Ground Data Networks

Yong-Tak Kim et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel approach that expands the existing QDM by incorporating Kriging and a Bayesian framework to address spatial bias. The proposed model is validated to effectively simulate bias-corrected daily rainfall sequences over large regions at fine resolutions. The potential use of this approach in the field of hydrometeorology is discussed.

Heat Stress Indicators in CMIP6: Estimating Future Trends and Exceedances of Impact-Relevant Thresholds

Clemens Schwingshackl et al.

Summary: This study calculated trends of heat stress indicators in different climate models under global warming, finding significant increases in all regions globally. The research indicates that different heat stress indicators show substantial variations in exceeding impact-relevant thresholds, highlighting the importance of selecting appropriate indicators and thresholds for reliable assessments.

Climate Change Impact Studies: Should We Bias Correct Climate Model Outputs or Post-Process Impact Model Outputs?

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the feasibility of bias correcting impact model outputs using pre-processing and post-processing methods. Results show that both approaches are capable of reducing the bias of simulated streamflow time series for most global climate models, but may perform poorly during the validation period.
