Elucidating the mechanism of the reverse water-gas shift reaction over Au/CeO2 catalysts using operando and transient spectroscopies

Marc Ziemba et al.

Summary: The reaction mechanism of the reverse water-gas shift reaction over Au/ceria catalysts was studied by monitoring the catalyst dynamics and reaction intermediates using operando and transient spectroscopies, as well as by DFT calculations. The study found that defect concentration is not rate-determinant, surface pretreatment affects CO2 reduction, and proposed an associative mechanism via carbonate and formate intermediates as the main route for the reaction.

Partially sintered copper-ceria as excellent catalyst for the high-temperature reverse water gas shift reaction

Hao-Xin Liu et al.

Summary: Constructing stable active sites in catalysts for high temperature catalytic reactions remains challenging. The authors successfully made stable copper clusters in the copper-ceria catalyst with high Cu loading (15 wt.%) for the high-temperature reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction, exhibiting unmatched activity and excellent durability.

Summary: The research emphasizes the importance of combining different techniques to address the redox properties and intermediate dynamics. By analyzing the ceria morphologies to study the influence of surface termination on catalyst systems. The results suggest that the LT-WGS reaction over Cu/CeO2 catalysts is mainly based on a redox mechanism.

Hydride Generation on the Cu-Doped CeO2(111) Surface and Its Role in CO2 Hydrogenation Reactions

Zhi-Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study used DFT + U calculations to investigate the H-2 dissociation and reaction between active H species and CO2 on pristine and Cu-doped CeO2(111) surfaces. It was found that the heterolytic H-2 dissociation for hydride generation and the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol can more readily occur on the Cu/CeO2(111) surface, leading to higher activity and selectivity.

A Review of CeO2 Supported Catalysts for CO2 Reduction to CO through the Reverse Water Gas Shift Reaction

Parisa Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: The catalytic conversion of CO2 to CO by the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction, followed by established synthesis gas conversion technologies, is a practical technique for converting CO2 to valuable chemicals and fuels in industrial settings. This study reviews the use of ceria-supported active metal catalysts in the RWGS reaction and explores the fundamental features of ceria. It also examines the RWGS reaction mechanism, reaction kinetics on supported catalysts, and the importance of oxygen vacancies. Recent advances in CeO2 supported metal catalyst design strategies are identified and assessed to understand the impact of physicochemical parameters on catalytic performance.

Toward an Atomic-Level Understanding of Ceria-Based Catalysts: When Experiment and Theory Go Hand in Hand

Marc Ziemba et al.

Summary: Ceria plays a crucial role in enhancing oxidation activity in catalysts, but identifying active sites remains a challenge. Recent studies have made significant progress in understanding the process of oxygen activation on ceria surfaces through a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. The facet-dependent adsorption and activation of gas-phase oxygen on ceria has been revealed, providing important insights into the mechanisms involved.

Insight into the mechanism of the water-gas shift reaction over Au/CeO2 catalysts using combined operando spectroscopies

Marc Ziemba et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanism of the low-temperature water-gas shift reaction over Au/CeO2 catalysts with different ceria terminations. Results showed that the presence of gold on different facets of ceria played a facet-dependent role in oxygen dynamics, suggesting that surface properties have a significant impact on reactivity. The study also highlighted the importance of factors such as dissociative adsorption of water and desorption of CO2/H2 in the reaction process.
