Methane Production from Confectionery Wastewater Treated in the Anaerobic Labyrinth-Flow Bioreactor

Marcin Debowski et al.

Summary: The production and consumption of confectionery products have been increasing globally, leading to a greater focus on effectively managing the wastewater generated. A study was conducted using a specially designed anaerobic reactor with labyrinth flow to explore the potential of utilizing high-load sewage from the confectionery industry for biogas production. The research aimed to determine the optimal parameters for anaerobic digestion to remove pollutants efficiently and achieve high methane production. The results showed that an organic loading rate (OLR) of 5.0-6.0 g COD/L center dot d resulted in the highest methane generation of 94.7 +/- 6.1 to 97.1 +/- 5.1 L CH4/d, with a high COD removal rate of 75.4 +/- 1.5 to 75.0 +/- 0.6%. The FOS/TAC ratio was below 0.4, indicating reactor stability, and the pH level was around 7.15 +/- 0.04 at OLR 5.0 g COD/L center dot d and 7.04 +/- 0.07 at OLR 6.0 g COD/L center dot d.

Evaluating the potential of a new reactor configuration to enhance simultaneous organic matter and nitrogen removal in dairy wastewater treatment

Danilo S. G. Lucio et al.

Summary: The dairy industry produces large amounts of wastewater with high levels of organic matter and nutrients, requiring external carbon sources for denitrification. A structured-bed hybrid baffled reactor (SBHBR) was designed to treat dairy wastewaters and promote sustainable nitrogen removal. The SBHBR achieved COD removal efficiencies above 90% and nitrification and denitrification efficiencies of 85.9 ± 17% and 85.2 ± 9% respectively. Stoichiometric calculations confirmed the activity of bacteria capable of performing anammox pathways as the main mechanisms for nitrogen removal.

Dairy wastewater management in EU: Produced amounts, existing legislation, applied treatment processes and future challenges

Athanasios S. Stasinakis et al.

Summary: The European Union 27 countries are significant producers of dairy wastewater, with a major portion being generated from the production of cheeses, drinking milk, acidified milk, and butterfat products. Six countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Netherlands, contribute to over 73% of the total DWW production. Efforts have been made by EU since 2019 to establish best available techniques for efficient monitoring and management of dairy wastewater.

Enhanced anaerobic digestion of dairy wastewater in a granular activated carbon amended sequential batch reactor

Mohanakrishnan Logan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of granular activated carbon (GAC) supplementation in enhancing anaerobic degradation of dairy wastewater. The results showed that the addition of GAC significantly increased methane production and accelerated lipid degradation, while the absence of GAC led to the accumulation of organic compounds. Furthermore, GAC supplementation reduced the lag phase duration and increased methane yield rate. Bacterial analysis revealed the enrichment of Synergistes and Geobacter in the GAC-amended reactor, with Methanolinea being the dominant archaea in the biofilm grown on GAC. Overall, this study demonstrated that GAC supplementation can promote stable and efficient methane production, accelerate lipid degradation, and potentially enhance the activity of electroactive microorganisms in anaerobic digesters treating dairy wastewater.

Optimisation of methane fermentation as a valorisation method for food waste products

Joanna Kazimierowicz et al.

Summary: The study aimed to optimize methane fermentation of food waste by identifying the best composition of substrates mixture and technical parameters of anaerobic digestion. Mesophilic conditions yielded higher biogas production compared to thermophilic conditions due to the presence of higher VFAs concentration. Above a certain OLR threshold, methane fermentation was inhibited.

The Effect of Static Magnetic Field on Methanogenesis in the Anaerobic Digestion of Municipal Sewage Sludge

Marcin Zielinski et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of a 17.6 mT static magnetic field on the efficiency of anaerobic digestion of municipal sewage sludge. Results showed significant impact on methane production efficiency, fermentation rate, and bacterial community structure, but no effect on cumulative biogas production. Longer exposure time to the magnetic field led to decreased efficiency and reduced populations of methanogens in the anaerobic sludge.

Performance and Microbial Community Analysis in an Anaerobic Hybrid Baffled Reactor Treating Dairy Wastewater

Alessandra Giordani et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of increasing organic loading rate on the microbial community and performance of the HABR during simulated dairy wastewater treatment. The system could maintain high COD removal efficiency and increase methane production, with most of the organic matter removal occurring in compartments C1 and C2. The dominant species in the HABR were acetoclastic methanogen Methanosaeta and hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanobacterium, while species capable of syntrophic partnership with methanogens were also identified.

Xiaojun Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the limitations of Nordmann's FOS/TAC titration method and the impact of one titration on the determination of the other. A numerical tool was developed to simulate acid-base equilibria for efficient prediction of experimental equivalent volumes, with new formulas proposed for calibrating FOS and TAC values. The performance of the proposed formulas in predicting FOS and TAC contents in anaerobic digestate was satisfactory.

Microalgal Hydrogen Production in Relation to Other Biomass-Based Technologies-A Review

Marcin Debowski et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is an environmentally friendly biofuel that could reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions if widely used. The main barrier to its widespread use for power generation is the lack of cost-effective production and storage methods. Microalgae, with their high photosynthetic efficiency and beneficial properties, are considered one of the strongest contenders among biohydrogen production technologies.
