35 years in plant lectin research: a journey from basic science to applications in agriculture and medicine

Els J. M. Van Damme

Summary: Plants contain a diverse group of lectins with different molecular structures and biochemical properties, which can be classified based on the primary structure of the lectin domain. These lectins reside in different cell compartments, interact with a variety of carbohydrate structures, and play a role in multiple biological functions.

The FBA Motif-Containing Protein NpFBA1 Causes Leaf Curling and Reduces Resistance to Black Shank Disease in Tobacco

Zhongyi Xie et al.

Summary: NpFBA1 is a newly identified gene that causes leaf curling and aging when overexpressed, making plants more susceptible to pathogen infection. Further studies revealed that overexpression of NpFBA1 significantly downregulated the expression of auxin response factors and lignin synthesis genes in the leaves.

Expression of a Fungal Lectin in Arabidopsis Enhances Plant Growth and Resistance Toward Microbial Pathogens and a Plant-Parasitic Nematode

Aboubakr Moradi et al.

Summary: The study showed that expressing Coprinopsis cinerea lectin 2 (CCL2) in Arabidopsis enhanced plant resistance against various nematodes and fungal pathogens, while also improving plant growth and biomass production. The mechanism of CCL2-mediated disease resistance enhancement depended on its fucoside-binding ability, and not on direct growth inhibition. Transcriptional induction of defense genes was significantly increased in CCL2-expressing plants compared to wild type plants, indicating the potential of fungal defense lectins in plant protection.

Overexpression of F-Box Nictaba Promotes Defense and Anthocyanin Accumulation in Arabidopsis thaliana After Pseudomonas syringae Infection

Andrea Romero-Perez et al.

Summary: The pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 affects Arabidopsis plants by promoting bacterial virulence and pathogenesis through type III effectors. The stress-inducible lectin F-Box Nictaba plays a role in plant defense against Pst DC3000 infection, with overexpression resulting in reduced leaf damage and increased anthocyanin content, photosystem II efficiency, and chlorophyll content. Knockout lines of F-Box Nictaba show no significant effects on plant symptoms after Pseudomonas infection, suggesting possible gene redundancy.
