Landauer Versus Nernst: What is the True Cost of Cooling a Quantum System?

Philip Taranto et al.

Summary: Thermodynamics links our understanding of the world to our ability to manipulate and control it. The third law of thermodynamics and Nernst's unattainability principle highlight the need for infinite resources to cool a system to absolute zero temperature. This study provides a framework for identifying the resources required for creating pure quantum states, and extends Landauer's principle to a thermodynamic setting. It emphasizes the importance of control and demonstrates the connection between information and thermodynamics.

Temporal correlations in the simplest measurement sequences

Lucas B. Vieira et al.

Summary: In the context of conducting the same measurement on a physical system at different times, temporal correlations and memory requirements are investigated. The study delves into deterministic sequence generation based on internal dimensions or memory of the system, with numerical analysis of probabilistic behavior in classical and quantum scenarios. Findings in the classical case suggest a nontrivial universal upper-bound for sequence realization probability, while indications show no such bound in the quantum case.

Kochen-Specker contextuality

Costantino Budroni et al.

Summary: This article introduces the Kochen-Specker theorem, a central result in the foundations of quantum mechanics, and its conflict with classical models. It reviews several proofs of the theorem and different notions of contextuality, and discusses the connections between contextuality and nonlocality or graph theory. Finally, it reviews the applications of contextuality in quantum information processing.

Experimental violations of Leggett-Garg inequalities on a quantum computer

Alessandro Santini et al.

Summary: This study observes the violations of Leggett-Garg's inequalities on single-and multiqubit systems using the IBM Quantum platform, and introduces Leggett-Garg-Bell's inequalities as an alternative. Quantum error mitigation is found to be essential for detecting inequality violations. Leggett-Garg-Bell's inequalities are assessed as the most efficient quantum coherence witnesses for investigating quantum hardware. The analysis also reveals the limitations of current quantum platforms.

Structure of dimension-bounded temporal correlations

Yuanyuan Mao et al.

Summary: This article examines the structure of temporal correlations generated by quantum systems and discovers that the temporal correlation space can be nonconvex under dimension constraints. It provides the required dimension for a given scenario to produce a convex correlation space and proves that this dimension is identical to the dimension needed to generate any point in the temporal correlation polytope. Furthermore, nonlinear inequalities are derived to demonstrate the nonconvexity of qubits and qutrits in the simplest scenario. An algorithm is also presented to assist in finding the minimum of a certain type of nonlinear expressions under dimension constraints.

Loophole-Free Interferometric Test of Macrorealism Using Heralded Single

Kaushik Joarder et al.

Summary: In this experiment, conducted using a sophisticated single-photon experimental setup, we comprehensively addressed the crucial loopholes in macrorealism experiments and successfully demonstrated clear violations of the Leggett-Garg inequality (LGI) and Wigner's form of the Leggett-Garg inequality (WLGI). The experimental results are consistent with quantum mechanical predictions and confirm the noninvasiveness of our implemented negative result measurement.

Certifying dimension of quantum systems by sequential projective measurements

Adel Sohbi et al.

Summary: This work analyzes correlations arising from quantum systems subject to sequential projective measurements to certify quantum dimensions greater than a certain value. The study refines previous methods and demonstrates that dimensions greater than two can be certified in simpler scenarios than before, while also certifying quantum systems with dimensions strictly greater than three for the first time in this sequential projective scenario. Additionally, a systematic numerical analysis on robustness shows that performing random projective measurements on random pure qutrit states allows a robust certification of quantum dimensions with very high probability.

Quantum Stochastic Processes and Quantum non-Markovian Phenomena

Simon Milz et al.

Summary: Classical stochastic processes are well studied in various fields, while quantum stochastic processes have been a topic of fierce debate due to pathological issues. Recent developments have addressed these issues and paved the way for generalizing classical stochastic processes theory to the quantum domain. This tutorial outlines the structure of quantum stochastic processes using the modern language of quantum combs, aimed at students in quantum physics and quantum-information theory.

Leggett-Garg tests for macrorealism: Interference experiments and the simple harmonic oscillator

J. J. Halliwell et al.

Summary: LG tests are used to explore quantum coherence on the macroscopic scale, with examples from interference experiments and harmonic oscillator systems. Violations of LG inequalities are found to be accompanied by destructive interference, with nontrivial regimes where destructive interference exists but the inequalities are satisfied. Recent analyses on Mach-Zehnder interferometers show similar features, while surprising relationships between LG inequalities and NSIT conditions are observed for non-dichotomic variables. Further analysis on a simple harmonic oscillator demonstrates two-time LG violations with a gaussian initial state.
