A stable LaB6 nanoneedle field-emission electron source for atomic resolution imaging with a transmission electron microscope

Shuai Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, a new cold field-emission electron source utilizing a LaB6 nanoneedle has been developed, which significantly improves the resolution of transmission electron microscopes (TEM). Compared with existing electron sources, this new source exhibits a smaller energy spread and higher emission current stability. The LaB6 nanoneedle cold field-emission electron source has important implications for high-resolution imaging in TEM, as well as cryogenic electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron beam lithography, and other electron beam technologies.

Nanoscale imaging of phonon dynamics by electron microscopy

Chaitanya A. Gadre et al.

Summary: Spatially resolved vibrational mapping of nanostructures is crucial for the development and understanding of thermal nanodevices and novel nanostructured materials. In this study, we demonstrate two-dimensional spatial mapping of phonons in a silicon-germanium quantum dot and observe nanoscale modification of phonon properties and non-equilibrium phonon dynamics at the interface.

Radiolysis-Driven Evolution of Gold Nanostructures - Model Verification by Scale Bridging In Situ Liquid-Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Diffraction

Birk Fritsch et al.

Summary: Utilizing ionizing radiation for in situ studies in liquid media allows for unique insights into the dynamics of nanostructure formation. Through kinetic simulations, researchers have demonstrated that these models provide a comprehensive understanding of reaction mechanisms and their applications in liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The study also revealed the dependency of oxidative etching on precursor concentration and dose rate, and how it can be used to analyze the shift in Gibbs free energy landscape induced by electron beam.

Sub-threshold ultrafast one-photon photoemission from a Cu(111) photocathode

L. A. Angeloni et al.

Summary: This study reports single-photon photoemission of electrons from a single-crystal Cu(111) photocathode for incident photon energies below the surface work function. The spectral characterization of the emitted electrons shows consistency with emission from a thermalized hot electron distribution photoexcited on sub-picosecond time scales. This is the first observation of excited-state thermionic emission from a planar metal photocathode, indicating the potential importance of band structure dependent sub-threshold photoemission mechanisms on the performance of photocathodes.

Tunable Broadband Photoresponse Electron-Emission Nanostructure: Metasurface-Extended Spectrum-Selecting and Plasmon-Enhanced Emitting

Yan Shen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to enhance field emission using plasmonic nanostructures and achieves tunable broadband photodetection. By combining Mo and Au nanostructures, the photocurrent is enhanced and can selectively respond to different frequencies and polarizations of light in the visible to near-infrared range. The amplitude of the photodetection signal can be adjusted by the dimensions of the nanopyramids, the number of Au plasmons, and the applied external electrostatic field.

Quantum Interference Visibility Spectroscopy in Two-Color Photoemission from Tungsten Needle Tips

Ang Li et al.

Summary: By studying the two-color visibility spectroscopy of multiphoton photoemissions from a solid-state nanoemitter, it was found that the visibility was around 90%, which could be varied between 0% and close to 100% by adjusting the relative intensity ratio of the two colors. Additionally, a theoretical model was able to explain all observations with great quantitative agreements, indicating the universality of this work in photo-driven quantum interference in various fields.

Optically Induced Field-Emission Source Based on Aligned Vertical Carbon Nanotube Arrays

Mengjie Li et al.

Summary: In this study, vertical carbon nanotube arrays (VCNTAs) are reported as high-density electron sources that can modulate emission processes with laser pulses under a high applied electric field and laser illumination. The emission process shows sensitivity to a power law of the laser intensity as bias electric field and laser power density increase, supporting the mechanism of optically induced field emission followed by over-the-barrier emission. The polarization dependence exhibits a cosine behavior, confirming the likelihood of optically induced field emission.
