Influence of the SEI Formation on the Stability and Lithium Diffusion in Si Electrodes

Baolin Wu et al.

Summary: Silicon is an attractive anode material for Li-ion batteries due to its high specific capacity, but the formation of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) caused by liquid electrolyte decomposition often occurs on silicon electrodes. The study found that a denser and more conductive SEI layer is formed in LiClO4-based electrolytes, resulting in higher discharge capacities for silicon electrodes. Additionally, coating a layer of artificial Li3PO4 SEI can suppress the formation of natural SEI, leading to better capacity retention.

Operando Muon Spin Rotation and Relaxation Measurement on LiCoO2 Half-Cell

Kazuki Ohishi et al.

Summary: The self-diffusion coefficient of Li+ ions in LixCoO2 was determined using a positive muon spin rotation and relaxation technique. The results showed that DLiJ increased as the Li content decreased and exhibited two small minima at x≈2/3 and x≈1/2. Furthermore, DLiJ showed a similar trend to the self-diffusion coefficient estimated using electrochemical techniques.

Summary: In situ muon spin relaxation is used to study ionic diffusion processes in a NASICON-type all-solid-state battery. Lattice matching of the cathode and electrolyte crystal structures enhances Li+ diffusion to minimize interfacial resistance. This technique allows for simultaneous observation of intrinsic ionic dynamics and electrochemical behavior in a nondestructive manner.

Study on the dynamics of a vanadium doped LiFePO4 lithium-ion battery using quasi-elastic neutron scattering technique

Chih-Wei Hu et al.

Summary: Investigation on lithium diffusion in active electrode materials is directly related to the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) is a powerful tool for studying lithium diffusion dynamics. In this study, the LFPV cathode material was examined using QENS technique, revealing that lithium diffusion in LFPV can be well described by a jump diffusion model. The estimated Li self-diffusion coefficient in LFPV material was approximately 3 x 10(-7) cm(2)/s at T = 600 K, which is significantly faster compared to previous reports using electrochemical measurements but consistent with molecular dynamic simulations. The slower Li ion diffusion in LFPV may be attributed to barriers at two phase boundaries, grain boundaries, and solid-electrolyte interfaces.
