Aquatic Eddy Covariance: The Method and Its Contributions to Defining Oxygen and Carbon Fluxes in Marine Environments

Peter Berg et al.

Summary: Aquatic eddy covariance (AEC) is a noninvasive technique with high temporal resolution and large area coverage, which provides new insights and more accurate assessments of the functioning and metabolism of aquatic ecosystems. The studies using AEC have revealed that benthic oxygen exchange is more dynamic than previously recognized, and accurate mean values can only be obtained by integrating measurements over all timescales. The technique has also seen new developments in measuring air-water gas exchange and long-term deployments.

Dispersal and Deposition of Detritus From Kelp Cultivation

Ole Jacob Broch et al.

Summary: A high resolution hydrodynamic model was used to study the transport and deposition patterns of particulate organic matter (POM) from kelp farming at different locations. The results showed that organic matter can be transported over varying distances and settle at different depths depending on the sinking rates and location. This study highlights the importance of controlling the dispersal and deposition of detritus from kelp cultivation.

Variation in seagrass meadow respiration measured by aquatic eddy covariance

Ieva Juska et al.

Summary: Accurate daily metabolic estimates are essential for evaluating the health of ecosystems and blue carbon contributions of vegetated coastal ecosystems. This study examined respiration variation in a Zostera marina seagrass meadow using aquatic eddy covariance, and investigated its impact on commonly used metabolic estimates.

Carbon sequestration potential increased by incomplete anaerobic decomposition of kelp detritus

Morten Foldager Pedersen et al.

Summary: Kelps have the potential to sequester carbon through the decomposition of detritus, but the extent of decomposition before reaching deep marine sinks remains uncertain. Decay rates were high initially, but slowed down over time, with little effect from temperature. Decomposition under aerobic conditions was almost complete within 300 days, while anaerobic decay stopped after 150-200 days, leaving 20-30% of biomass to decompose extremely slowly or not at all.

Resolving community metabolism of eelgrass Zostera marina meadows by benthic flume-chambers and eddy covariance in dynamic coastal environments

Nicola Camillini et al.

Summary: This study assessed eelgrass metabolism in the Baltic Sea using benthic flume-chambers and aquatic eddy covariance, revealing that sediment resuspension can significantly increase oxygen uptake rates. Laboratory investigations showed that sediment resuspension could potentially increase benthic oxygen uptake up to 6-fold due to the reoxidation of reduced compounds.

Sustained productivity and respiration of degrading kelp detritus in the shallow benthos: Detached or broken, but not dead

Nadia Frontier et al.

Summary: This study compares the physiological response of degrading detritus from two competing North East Atlantic kelp species and finds that they continue to produce oxygen and sustain positive net primary production for up to 56 days under different environmental conditions. The research suggests that ostensibly detrital kelp can contribute to Blue Carbon fixation and highlights the potential wide-reaching effects of climate-induced shifts in kelp forest composition on organic matter cycling in benthic ecosystems.
