Asymmetric transformations enabled by synergistic dual transition-metal catalysis

Liang Wei et al.

Summary: Synergistic dual transition-metal catalysis has gained increasing prominence in the enantioselective construction of chemical bonds, showing greater reactivity, selectivity, and efficiency than traditional mono-transition-metal catalysis. This review presents recent examples of asymmetric reactions enabled by synergistic dual metal catalysis, discussing the mechanism, kinetics, and selectivity in detail to showcase the cooperative and independent action of two distinct transition-metal complexes.

Dispersion and Steric Effects on Enantio-/Diastereoselectivities in Synergistic Dual Transition-Metal Catalysis

Bo Li et al.

Summary: Comprehensive computational studies were conducted to investigate the mechanisms of enantioselective Cu/Pd and stereodivergent Cu/Ir dual-catalytic syntheses of alpha,alpha-disubstituted alpha-amino acids (alpha-AAs). The results demonstrate how ligand-encoded chiral information is transferred to the alpha-/beta-sites of the resulting alpha-AAs and how the mode of regio-/stereoselection is altered by differences in transition-metal-stabilized coupling partners.

Computational Study of Homogeneous Multimetallic Cooperative Catalysis

Giuseppe Sciortino et al.

Summary: Cooperative multimetallic catalysis involves activating and coupling two substrates or functionalities simultaneously, leading to increased reaction rates and selectivity. Metal moieties are responsible for activation, while selectivity derives from interactions between substrates and catalysts.

On the Importance of Considering Multinuclear Metal Sites in Homogeneous Catalysis Modeling

Akinobu Matsuzawa et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of computational studies in realizing that bimetallic complexes are the active catalytic species in some reactions, rather than monometallic complexes as previously assumed. The combination of experimental observations and computation of metal precursor speciation is a powerful tool in predicting the presence of bimetallic intermediates or transition states.

Synergistic Pd/Cu-catalyzed enantioselective Csp2-F bond alkylation of fluoro-1,3-dienes with aldimine esters

Huimin Yu et al.

Summary: This study reports a protocol for enantioselective C(sp2)-C(sp3) coupling enabled by synergistic copper and palladium catalysis. It overcomes the challenge of high bond dissociation energies of C(sp2)-F bonds and provides access to chiral products with high enantioselectivity. The detailed mechanism of this reaction is investigated and the enantioselectivity is rationalized.

Reaction Mechanism Underlying Pd(II)-Catalyzed Oxidative Coupling of Ethylene and Benzene to Form Styrene: Identification of a Cyclic Mono-PdII Bis-CuII Complex as the Active Catalyst

Charles B. Musgrave et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of styrene synthesis using Pd(OAc)(2) catalyst precursor in the presence of excess Cu(II). The cyclic PdCu2(mu-OAc)(6) is identified as the predominant species responsible for catalysis and a full reaction mechanism is proposed based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The findings provide valuable insights into the catalytic conversion of ethylene and benzene to styrene.

Stereodivergent Synthesis of Enantioenriched γ-Butyrolactones Bearing Two Vicinal Stereocenters Enabled by Synergistic Copper and Iridium Catalysis

Lu Xiao et al.

Summary: Utilizing a new reaction model, gamma-butyrolactones with diverse stereoisomers were prepared stereospecifically through a synergistic Cu/Ir-catalyzed asymmetric cascade reaction, allowing control of vicinal stereocenters. The study of the chiral intermediate shed light on the regio- and stereoselectivity of the initial bond formation process, while control experiments provided insight into catalyst interactions in the dual catalytic system. Enantioenriched products were further converted into structurally complex chiral molecules and organocatalysts, expanding the synthetic accessibility of these compounds.
