Carbon nanomaterial-treated cell cultures of Nostoc flagelliforme produce exopolysaccharides with ameliorative physio-chemical properties

Xiaolong Yuan et al.

Summary: The feasibility and efficiency of using carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) in algal biotechnology were investigated in this study. The results showed that graphene oxide treatment significantly improved biomass and exopolysaccharide (EPS) production in the algal culture. Additionally, the CNMs treatments had a positive impact on cellular levels of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzyme activities. The monosaccharide compositions and functional groups of the EPSs were also altered by the CNMs treatments, leading to improved flocculating ability, water absorption ability, and reactive oxygen species scavenging ability. This study expands our understanding of the application of CNMs in the production and modification of polysaccharides during algal cultivation.

Effects of nitrogen source and NaCl stress on oil production in Vischeria sp. WL1 (Eustigmatophyceae) isolated from dryland biological soil crusts in China

Yang She et al.

Summary: This study reported a new strain of Eustigmatophyceae, Vischeria sp. WL1, with high oil content suitable for oil production. Different nitrogen sources and salt stress treatments were explored, and it was found that 4.5 mM peptone-N and 0.3 M NaCl had positive effects on oil productivity.

On the Efficacy of H2O2 or S2O82- at Promoting the Inactivation of a Consortium of Cyanobacteria and Bacteria in Algae-Laden Water

Javier Moreno-Andres et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms in coastal areas can impact water sources, and this study evaluates the effectiveness of H2O2 and S2O82- reagents in treating algae-laden waters. The results show that H2O2-based processes are more efficient in inhibiting cyanobacterial growth compared to S2O82-. However, S2O82- can prevent the regrowth of bacteria, while H2O2 doses alone are not sufficient.

Increased antioxidant activity and improved structural characterization of sulfuric acid-treated stepwise degraded polysaccharides from Pholiota nameko PN-01

Lan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the sulfuric acid degradation of Pholiota nameko polysaccharide and found that the treatment significantly altered the structural characteristics and enhanced the antioxidant activity of the polysaccharides. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the stepwise degraded polysaccharides showed improved antioxidant capacity, with the ability to scavenge free radicals in zebrafish significantly enhanced.

Interspecific protection against oxidative stress: green algae protect harmful cyanobacteria against hydrogen peroxide

Erik F. J. Weenink et al.

Summary: Oceanographic studies have shown that heterotrophic bacteria can protect marine cyanobacteria against oxidative stress caused by hydrogen peroxide. In freshwater ecosystems, less-sensitive green algae can protect cyanobacteria by degrading H2O2 faster and providing antioxidant enzymes. The level of protection depends on the density of green algae.

Effect of hydrogen peroxide on natural phytoplankton and bacterioplankton in a drinking water reservoir: Mesocosm-scale study

Allan A. Santos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of H2O2 on cyanobacterial blooms, finding that H2O2 efficiently suppressed cyanobacteria, green algae, and diatoms, leading to an improvement in water quality. However, a significant change in the composition of bacterial communities was observed after the use of H2O2, indicating a shift in favor of certain bacterial genera.
