Irrigation area, efficiency and water storage mediate the drought resilience of irrigated agriculture in a semi-arid catchment

Bruce Lankford et al.

Summary: We investigated the impacts of hydrological variables on the resilience of irrigated agriculture to drought in a semi-arid catchment in South Africa. By analyzing water accounts and a key resilience indicator called Days to Day Zero (DDZ), we found that irrigators have historically absorbed and adapted to drought events through water storage and efficient irrigation practices, but they are currently on a maladaptive pathway which decreases their capacity to absorb future droughts.

Assessment of lake area in response to climate change at varying elevations: A case study of Mt. Tianshan, Central Asia

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: Changes in lake area in Central Asia's Tianshan Mountains are influenced by elevation and various factors. Low-elevation lakes have decreased in area due to human activities, while high-elevation glacial lakes have increased in area. Mid-elevation lakes are more sensitive to temperature changes. Understanding elevation gradients and recharge types is crucial when using lakes for climate reconstructions or predicting lake evolution.

Satellite Laser Altimetry Reveals a Net Water Mass Gain in Global Lakes With Spatial Heterogeneity in the Early 21st Century

Shuangxiao Luo et al.

Summary: Lake water storage changes play a crucial role in the climate, hydrological cycle, and environments. Using satellite data from ICESat and ICESat-2, researchers have studied the water level and volume changes in global natural lakes larger than 10 km(2) from 2003 to 2020. They found that, overall, the total water storage in these lakes increased during the studied period. However, large lakes under dry and high water-stress conditions experienced significant water loss. The findings suggest that these drying lakes may continue to shrink in the future due to climate change and increasing water demands.

Multi-Source Remote Sensing Data for Lake Change Detection in Xinjiang, China

Yuting Liu et al.

Summary: Lake water resources in arid areas play a crucial role in regional resource and environmental management. This study utilized satellite data to interpret the changes in water level and area of lakes in arid areas. The relationships between lake dynamics and glacial meltwater, precipitation, and lake basin runoff were analyzed. The results showed that the changes in alpine lakes were closely related to the lake basin/lake area ratio, while the glacier/lake area ratio had a weaker relationship. Additionally, the spatial pattern of lake change was consistent with climate change.

A twenty-years remote sensing study reveals changes to alpine pastures under asymmetric climate warming

Lilin Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of vegetation development to asymmetric climate warming in high-mountain Asia. It uses meteorological records, normalized difference vegetation index, and phenology index to analyze the maximum greenness and start of the growing season. The results show that nighttime warming has a positive effect on maximum greenness, while daytime warming has a negative effect. The frequency of meteorological drought events also affects the response of vegetation to warming.

Xiangming Tang et al.

Summary: Arid and semiarid regions play a vital role in the development and sustainability of local societies, and understanding the impact of environmental changes and anthropogenic activities on water resources is crucial. This study focuses on Lake Bosten in NW China and reveals the long-term trends in water level and salinity, showing the influence of both human activities and climate change. The findings emphasize the importance of monitoring and managing aquatic environmental changes for the balance between socioeconomic development and ecological protection.

Centenary covariations of water salinity and storage of the largest lake of Northwest China reconstructed by machine learning

Xingan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study uses machine learning to reconstruct the centenary variations of water storage and salinity of Bosten Lake in Northwest China. The results show significant changes in the lake's water level and salinity over the past decades. The water level of Bosten Lake experienced a substantial decline in the 1980s and 2010s, but has rapidly recovered in recent years. The study also highlights the close relationship between the lake's salinity and its water level and storage, which are influenced by factors such as vapor pressure, precipitation, and wet day frequency.

Summary: Hydrological connectivity has a significant impact on water environment and wetland ecological security, but the mechanism between hydrological connectivity and water quality is not fully understood. This study used a landscape connectivity approach to assess the connectivity of water patches in the Bosten Lake Basin and analyzed its response to human activities and climate change. The results showed a strong correlation between hydrological connectivity and water area, water level, and improved water quality.

Guosen Shi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the runoff change in the upper Kaidu River basin using a modified Budyko framework considering snowmelt. The results showed that the increase in precipitation was the main cause of runoff increase, while landscape changes had a relatively small contribution. This study provides valuable insights for water resources management in the upper Kaidu River basin and understanding the response of runoff to climate change in snowmelt-affected regions.

Exploring annual lake dynamics in Xinjiang (China): spatiotemporal features and driving climate factors from 2000 to 2019

Lilin Zheng et al.

Summary: The number and area of lakes in Xinjiang have significantly increased over the past two decades, with the most significant expansion occurring in alpine areas at 3000-5000 meters above sea level. Precipitation directly contributes to lake expansion, while the impacts of recent warming are more complex, particularly in higher altitude regions. Climate warming leading to glacier retreat and increased meltwater from ground ice are important factors driving lake expansion.

Summary: By incorporating 50 years of flood data for the Manas River Kenswat Hydrological Station from 1957 to 2006, the study found that 1993 is the year when the annual maximum peak discharge and flood volume are most likely to change in the flood characteristic sequences. The mixed distribution (MD) model is shown to be more accurate in analyzing non-stationarity compared to the conditional probability distribution (CPD) and traditional P-III distribution models.
