Polystyrene microplastics up-regulates liver glutamine and glutamate synthesis and promotes autophagy-dependent ferroptosis and apoptosis in the cerebellum through the liver-brain axis

Kai Yin et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to microplastics caused liver metabolic disorders and increased synthesis of glutamine and glutamate in chickens. Microplastics also reduced the expression of tight junction proteins in the blood-brain barrier and triggered autophagy and apoptosis through the inhibition of signaling pathways, leading to neurological dysfunction.

Melatonin Alleviates Acute Kidney Injury by Inhibiting NRF2/Slc7a11 Axis-Mediated Ferroptosis

Yue-bo Huang et al.

Summary: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a clinical problem with unclear pathophysiology and lacking effective treatment. Ferroptosis, a novel form of regulated cell death, has been shown to play a vital role in AKI, while melatonin, an antioxidant, has therapeutic effects on AKI. This study reveals that melatonin prevents ferroptosis in AKI by acting on the NRF2/Slc7a11 axis.

Inhibition of CISD2 promotes ferroptosis through ferritinophagy-mediated ferritin turnover and regulation of p62-Keap1-NRF2 pathway

Yanchun Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed that knockdown of CISD2 accelerated ferroptotic cell death induced by Erastin, characterized by increased lipid peroxidation, GSH exhaustion, and iron accumulation. CISD2 depletion enhanced lysosomal activity and activated ferritinophagy under Erastin exposure. Additionally, CISD2 knockdown inhibited the p62-Keap1-NRF2 pathway, leading to oxidative stress and ferroptosis.

Tumor heterogeneity in autophagy-dependent ferroptosis

Jingbo Li et al.

Summary: Autophagy plays a complex role in cellular stress and can either promote survival or trigger death. Recent evidence suggests that the molecular machinery of autophagy facilitates ferroptosis, a regulated cell death process. The study found tumor heterogeneity in autophagy-dependent ferroptosis, showing different biological behaviors in terms of cell death dynamics.

An updated review of mechanistic potentials of melatonin against cancer: pivotal roles in angiogenesis, apoptosis, autophagy, endoplasmic reticulum stress and oxidative stress

Saeed Mehrzadi et al.

Summary: Cancer is a serious life-threatening disease that causes millions of deaths annually worldwide. Despite advancements in therapeutic approaches, the survival rate and quality of life for cancer patients remain low. Therefore, finding novel and effective complementary therapies is crucial. Melatonin has been shown to have powerful anticancer properties through various mechanisms, making it a promising option for cancer treatment.
