Monosubstituted Doublet Sn(I) Radical Featuring Substantial Unquenched Orbital Angular Momentum

Dongmin Wang et al.

Summary: Here, the synthesis and characterization of a neutral monosubstituted Sn(I) radical (2) supported by a sterically hindered hydrindacene ligand is reported, which represents the first tin analogue of a free carbyne. The unique electronic structure of 2, with a sole Sn-C sigma bond, results in a S = 1/2 ground state with two-fold orbital pseudo-degeneracy and substantial unquenched orbital angular momentum. 2 exhibits reactivity towards N-heterocyclic carbene, benzophenone, diphenyl diselenide, and p-benzoquinone, forming Sn-S and Sn-O bonds.

Beyond Steric Crowding: Dispersion Energy Donor Effects in Large Hydrocarbon Ligands

Kristian L. Mears et al.

Summary: Interactions between sterically crowded hydrocarbon-substituted ligands involve both repulsive Pauli repulsion and attractive London dispersion interactions. Although the London dispersion interactions play a central role in the formation of condensed matter, they are not as widely recognized as the Pauli repulsion. This is due to the relatively weak individual H⋅⋅⋅H interactions compared to the collective LD energy resulting from numerous H⋅⋅⋅H interactions. The importance of LD attraction energies emerges in certain molecules and can overshadow the Pauli effects.

Synthesis of Heavy N-Heterocyclic Tetrylenes: Influence of Ligand Sterics on Structure

Ryan J. Schwamm et al.

Summary: The study describes the synthesis and structural characterization of a series of Ge, Sn, and Pb compounds with different substituents, where the Ge complexes are monomeric, the Sn complexes are dimeric, and the Pb complexes exist as both monomers and dimers. Solution phase NMR spectroscopic data indicate that all compounds are monomeric in solution. Structural parameters, including buried volume (%V-bur), are discussed.
