3D printed hydrogel for articular cartilage regeneration

Xue Yang et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional printed hydrogel is a promising approach in cartilage tissue engineering due to its similarity to the extracellular matrix and its ability to fabricate 3D cell culture scaffolds. Various hydrogels, both natural and synthetic, have been tested for 3D printing in vitro articular cartilage tissues. The advancement in materials and printing techniques allows for the fabrication of delicate cartilage structures on multiple scales. Stimuli-responsive hydrogels and their application prospects in tissue engineering are also discussed in this review. The development of novel composite hydrogels that meet the requirements of native articular cartilage is crucial for further advancement in the field.

Photo-curable carboxymethylcellulose composite hydrogel as a promising biomaterial for biomedical applications

Abdelrahman Barakat et al.

Summary: In this study, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was successfully synthesized, and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from sugarcane were graft-copolymerized with GMA to enhance their physicochemical and biological characteristics. The addition of CNCs-g-GMA nanofillers increased the thermal stability of the prepared hydrogel and showed antimicrobial activity against multidrug resistance pathogens. Therefore, CMC-g-GMA filled with CNCs-g-GMA composite hydrogel could be used as compatible biomaterials for versatile biomedical applications.

Evaluation of Topical and Subconjunctival Injection of Hyaluronic Acid-Coated Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery to Posterior Eye

Cheng-Han Tsai et al.

Summary: Posterior eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, are difficult to treat due to ineffective drug delivery. In this study, self-assembling nanoparticles made from gelatin-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and surface-decorated with hyaluronic acid (HA) were successfully used for drug delivery to the retinal/choroidal area. The nanoparticles, characterized by a positive surface and HA decoration, showed high drug delivery efficiency to the posterior eye through eye drops and subconjunctival injection.

Topography-Supported Nanoarchitectonics of Hybrid Scaffold for Systematically Modulated Bone Regeneration and Remodeling

Tae-Sik Jang et al.

Summary: Orthopedic implants reinforced with titanium dioxide nanoparticles via dopamine-induced polymerization and coated with hydroxyapatite show enhanced mechanical strength and biocompatibility. PEEK with internal TiO2 reinforcement improves bone cell proliferation and differentiation, while the HA coating leads to increased osteoblast absorption. Micro-CT and histological analyses confirm new bone formation and high bone-to-implant contact ratio on the HA-coated PEEK structure reinforced with TiO2 nanoparticles.

3D printed high-resolution scaffold with hydrogel microfibers for providing excellent biocompatibility

Wenjie Ye et al.

Summary: Melt electrowriting (MEW) can print high-resolution scaffolds with ultrafine fibers, but often suffer from low cell seeding efficiency due to large pore size. By electrospinning a GelMA hydrogel fibers membrane (HFM) on the MEW scaffold, a composite scaffold was created with controlled structures, porosity, and excellent cell seeding performance. The composite scaffold showed great biocompatibility with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVES) and supported cell migration to form a cell sheet, suggesting potential applications in tissue engineering repair.
