Thermal Stability and Residual Stresses in Additively Manufactured Single and Multi-material Systems

Bikash Kumar et al.

Summary: A sequential coupled thermo-mechanical model was developed to monitor the thermal stability, solidification characteristics, and origin of residual stresses in laser-based direct energy deposition of IN718 and IN718-Ti6Al4V systems. The model showed qualitative agreement with experimental measurements. The substitution of IN718 with Ti6Al4V caused a significant temperature rise, low solidification velocity, and large melt pool in the preliminary deposited layers. The overall tensile residual stress reduced due to the lowered thermal gradient, but a reversal of the maximum tensile residual stress location occurred on changing the substrate to Ti6Al4V.

Unidirectional cold rolling of Fe-21Cr-5Mn-1.5Ni alloy - Microstructure, texture and magnetic properties

Tushar Ramdas Dandekar et al.

Summary: In this study, the changes in microstructure, texture, and magnetic properties during the unidirectional cold rolling of a Fe-21Cr-5Mn-1.5Ni alloy were investigated. The results showed that the thickness of the grain along the normal direction reduced more in austenite than in ferrite, and the strain was more partitioned in austenite. The saturation magnetization increased with the increase in cold rolling reduction, and the strain induced martensite (SIM) was similar to 11% after 80% cold rolling. The development of specific textures was observed in both austenite and ferrite after cold rolling, and both texture and strain played a role in the change in magnetic properties.

Aging phenomenon in low molybdenum Fe-21Cr-5Mn-1.5Ni alloy: Microstructure evolution, texture development and corrosion behavior

Tushar R. Dandekar et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effect of long-term aging at 750 degrees C on the microstructure evolution, texture development, and corrosion behavior of a low molybdenum Fe-21Cr-1.5Ni-5Mn alloy. The results showed that an increase in aging time resulted in an increase in the proportion of sigma-phase. The sigma-phase formation did not have a specific orientation relationship with neighboring ferrite grains. The lower amount of Cr/Mo and higher N in the alloy delayed the precipitation of the sigma-phase but did not prevent it. The increase in sigma-phase with aging time led to a decrease in corrosion resistance.

Texture, microstructure and mechanical properties of laser beam welded AISI 2507 super duplex stainless steel

Ceyhun Kose et al.

Summary: This study investigates the weldability of AISI 2507 super duplex stainless steel sheets using laser welding. The impact of heat inputs and post-weld heat treatment on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the joints was analyzed. It was found that samples welded with lower heat input exhibited higher microhardness and tensile strength values. Additionally, post-weld heat treatment resulted in decreased hardness and tensile strength but improved toughness and ductility properties.

Insights into the microstructure evolution and crystallographic texture of API X-65 steel/UNS S32750 stainless steel dissimilar welds by EBSD analysis

Morteza Shamanian et al.

Summary: In this study, the microstructural features and microtexture evolution of API X-65 steel welded to UNS S32750 stainless steel were evaluated with different heat input (HI) values. It was found that decreasing the HI value led to a decrease in the fractions of austenite, resulting in almost equal fractions of austenite and ferrite phases in the weldment using the HI value of 0.68 kJ/mm. The impact resistance of the weld metals was slightly better compared to the base metals.

Strain rate sensitivity behaviour of Fe-21Cr-1.5Ni-5Mn alloy and its constitutive modelling

Tushar Ramdas Dandekar et al.

Summary: The hot deformation behavior of Fe-21Cr-1.5Ni-5Mn alloy was studied through isothermal unidirectional hot compression tests, showing that the developed model accurately portrayed its flow behavior. The hot deformation activation energy for peak stress was found to be 508.3 kJ mol(-1), with the best match between experimental and predicted flow stress obtained at 975 degrees C.

Multistep Cross Rolling of UNS S32101 Steel: Microstructure, Texture, and Magnetic Properties

Tushar R. Dandekar et al.

Summary: The effect of multistep cross rolling on UNS S32101 steel microstructure, texture, and magnetic properties was investigated in this study. It was found that cold-rolling reduction led to changes in microstructure and magnetic properties, as well as the formation of strain-induced martensite. Analysis of hysteresis loops and microstructures allowed for a better understanding of the impact of cold-rolling reduction on the properties of UNS S32101 steel.

Microstructural influence of sigma phase on pitting corrosion behavior of duplex stainless steel/NaCl electrolyte couple

David D. S. Silva et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of the sigma phase on pitting corrosion behavior of thermally-aged duplex stainless steel, using structural, morphological, and electrochemical characterizations. Potentiodynamic tests in 1M NaCl solution at different temperatures were conducted, along with 3D roughness image comparisons for before and after corrosion tests. The study concludes that potentiodynamic tests combined with optical profilometry are a successful approach to evaluate surface degradation mechanisms due to pitting corrosion.
