Greener sample preparation method for direct determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in river sediment based on an aqueous biphasic system with functionalized ionic liquids

Jasmina Musovic et al.

Summary: This study designed and synthesized two water-soluble functionalized ionic liquids (FILs) for the selective extraction of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from river sediments. It was found that the ligand anion and the cation were responsible for the efficient extraction and formation of the aqueous biphasic systems (ABS), respectively. The partition coefficients for Cd(II) and Pb(II) using [bmim][mbt] were 408 and 180, respectively. The optimal conditions for the direct extraction of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from sediments were investigated and the proposed method showed a high level of greenness.

Synthesis and structural characterization of copper-cuprizone complexes

M. Jake Pushie et al.

Summary: Cuprizone is a ligand that forms intensely colored blue complexes with copper ions and can be used to detect trace levels of copper. It has also been found to induce demyelination and is commonly used to create animal models of demyelination. However, there have been limited studies on the structural characterization of the copper coordination properties of cuprizone.

A fluorescence digital image-based method using carbon quantum dots to evaluate the compliance of a biocidal agent

Joao Paulo Barbosa de Almeida et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a simple, low-cost, and easy-to-handle analytical procedure based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to detect commercially available formulated microbicides. The concentration of hypochlorite is measured by fluorescence quenching mechanisms. The method is fast, low-cost, and suitable for in situ testing.

A novel digital image method for determination of reducing sugars in aged and non-aged cachacas employing a smartphone

Mathews de O. K. Franco et al.

Summary: A novel method using digital image and a smartphone as detector was proposed for colorimetric determination of reducing sugars in cachaca. The method is simple, does not require complex technical knowledge, and could be used as a tool to check possible fraud, adulteration, or non-compliance to the law. Additionally, it was found through experiments that non-aged cachacas have three times higher reducing sugar content compared to aged cachacas, as producers often add sugar to adjust sensory deficits in the final product.

Evaluating TiO2 Photocatalysis Performance in Microtubes on Paper Background by Smartphone: Principles and Application Examples

Xian Liu et al.

Summary: A new method using paper and microtubes (PMTs) combined with smartphone colorimetric detection was proposed for testing the photocatalytic performance of TiO2. The method showed high reliability in monitoring the photocatalytic process of different dye solutions. This alternative analysis method could be used when high-tech equipment is not available.

Assessment of sensory and physical-chemical quality, and potential for certification of cachacas from the state of Paraiba, Brazil

Anderson Ferreira Vilela et al.

Summary: This research studied the organizational aspects and compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices of 53% of formal cachaca producers in Paraiba, showing that most samples met the legal quality parameters but struggled to meet certification parameters. The sensory evaluation suggested that the distillates could benefit from longer storage in wooden barrels. Overall, the results indicated that obtaining certification seals may be challenging for cachaca producers in Paraiba due to issues with organizational aspects.

Digital images and independent components analysis in the determination of bioactive compounds from grape juice

Karla K. Beltrame et al.

Summary: Analytical methods based on digital images and Independent Components Analysis (ICA) can provide applicable pseudo-univariate calibration models to determine bioactive compounds in foods, achieving correlation coefficients higher than 0.9. The device used to obtain images is cheaper compared to most analytical instruments, suggesting that digital images may have a promising future in developing analytical methodologies for complex samples from a pseudo-univariate calibration perspective.
